Sunday 4th May 2025 - Kick Off 2pm
West Ham United
The fans have shown very little patience at West Ham United and Graham Potter may already be feeling the pressure after late goals did for his team again last weekend. With the fixture ticking into the 89th minute at the Amex Stadium and with West Ham United leading 1-2, Potter showed his displeasure in the post-match press conference after seeing his team lose 3-2.
The summer is going to be a very important time for West Ham United and their manager and a fast start will be needed when the season kicks off in August. The Hammers need some momentum for that, but they remain in 17th place in the Premier League table after results last weekend and West Ham United have a 5-4-8 record at the London Stadium.
West Ham United have not won any of their last 7 Premier League games and the defeat at Brighton last weekend makes it 4 losses in that run. They have only lost 1 of their last 4 League games at the London Stadium, but West Ham United have been held to consecutive draws here against Bournemouth and Southampton.
Edson Alvarez is a doubt, but Evan Ferguson is available having been ineligible to play against Brighton.
Tottenham Hotspur
It was perhaps the best overall performance in months, but the late goal conceded on Thursday night has just made things slightly more awkward for Tottenham Hotspur. At 3-0 fans might have begun to book flights to Bilbao for the Europa League Final, but 3-1 does offer Bodo/Glimt a glimmer of hope and Ange Postecoglou's thoughts have already turned to next Thursday.
The Premier League form has been a huge disappointment for Tottenham Hotspur and they are 16th in the standings and with every chance of finishing this weekend just above the relegation zone. However, the opportunity to return to the Champions League by ending the seventeen year wait for silverware is the light at the end of the tunnel. The side have a 5-1-11 away record in the Premier League and that is more remarkable to think about considering Tottenham Hotspur have scored more goals than they have conceded on their travels.
Tottenham Hotspur's win on Thursday means they are unbeaten in 4 Europa League ties and have won 3 of those, but it has been a much different tale in the Premier League. They have won 1 of their last 8 Premier League games and Spurs have suffered 6 losses in that time, including in each of their last 3 fixtures played. Since winning at Portman Road, Tottenham Hotspur have lost 4 away Premier League games in succession.
James Maddison and Dominic Solanke both scored on Thursday, but picked up knocks and neither may be risked. Other changes have to be expected to ensure key players are fit and healthy for the tough Second Leg to be played in Norway in the Europa League next week.
Head to Head
West Ham United scored first, but were eventually beaten 4-1 at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season.
The Hammers are unbeaten in 4 at the London Stadium against Tottenham Hotspur, but the last 2 here have both ended 1-1.
Prediction
Both sets of fans have little love for the opposition and that can sometimes put the pressure on managers to give these fixtures that much more important even at a time of the season when other games may take priority.
Ange Postecoglou does not strike me as someone who will care too much about what the fans think about his team selection and his focus as Tottenham Hotspur manager is making sure the squad is ready to compete in the Europa League Semi Final Second Leg to be played next Thursday.
With that in mind, Tottenham Hotspur's starting eleven is expected to be rotated and the First Leg goalscoring heroes James Maddison and Dominic Solanke are unlikely to be risked having picked up knocks. The injuries have cleared up so there will be quality on the field, but Tottenham Hotspur's recent Premier League form has been very poor and it may be tough to change that this weekend.
Graham Potter was much calmer in his pre-match conference for this fixture compared with his post-match comments from last weekend, but admitted that he had every right to be angry. He needs some positive results to at least give the fans something to hold onto in the summer and beating Tottenham Hotspur will always make West Ham United fans feel good about things.
They are not easy to trust on current form, but West Ham United have been scoring goals and they should have beaten Southampton and Brighton. Playing a Tottenham Hotspur team that is perhaps distracted is an advantage for West Ham United and it may be worth an interest in the hosts to win at odds against, even if the odds have come in significantly with the current situation Spurs find themselves in.
