Chelsea
Much as expected, Chelsea are almost certainly going to be playing in the UEFA Conference League Final later this month having won their Semi Final First Leg 1-4 at Djurgarden on Thursday. The players will have been pleased with their efforts in a tough surface, but there will have been further encouragement taken from the fact that Nottingham Forest were beaten in the Premier League on the same evening.
With just four Premier League games left to play, that result at the City Ground means Chelsea are in control of one of the top five places that will bring Champions League Football next season. Enzo Maresca's job future may be attached to whether Chelsea are back in the premier European competition at the end of this month, but The Blues have to finish with some tough fixtures. The side have a 10-5-2 record at Stamford Bridge this season.
Chelsea were beaten by Legia Warsaw in the UEFA Conference League Quarter Final Second Leg, but have bounced back to win 3 in a row in all competitions, including consecutive Premier League victories. Not only are Chelsea now unbeaten in 8 home Premier League games, but the narrow win over Everton last weekend means they have won 6 of their last 7 League fixtures played at Stamford Bridge.
Robert Sanchez and Christopher Nkunku are both doubts, although the former looks closer to a return this weekend.
Liverpool
Just for a moment some fans may have felt Tottenham Hotspur were going to play party-pooper at Anfield last Sunday, but Liverpool turned things around very comfortably and have officially won the Premier League title. At this stage of the season you do have to wonder what further motivation can inspire the squad, but games against Chelsea tend to give Liverpool a bit of a boost.
They took control of the Premier League title race before Christmas and Liverpool have simply not been pushed by the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City as they may have anticipated. The Reds will travel to West London with an 11-5-1 away record in the Premier League this season.
Liverpool suffered exits in the Champions League and League Cup over the space of a few days in March, but the Premier League form did not really suffer and they have won 7 of their last 8 in the top flight. They have only lost once away from Anfield in the Premier League this season, but that happened last month in West London in Liverpool's 3-2 loss at Craven Cottage.
Conor Bradley is expected to be available for selection this weekend, while Joe Gomez continues his recovery.
Head to Head
Liverpool came through with a 2-1 win over Chelsea when hosting them at Anfield earlier this season.
Chelsea have not won any of their last 6 home League games against Liverpool, although the last 3 have ended in draws at Stamford Bridge.
Prediction
There will have been some big celebrations last Sunday after Liverpool were confirmed as Champions of England for the second time in six seasons.
They have had a week to move past those, but there is not a lot of motivation left for the players and you do have to wonder if that is going to lead to a downturn in form.
Inspiration may actually be found by the opponent- there is a real rivalry between the Chelsea and Liverpool supporters- and The Reds have a decent record here in recent years.
Arne Slot may also be looking to see how much hunger his squad have to push on for more with the momentum to end this season likely to be strong to open 2025/26 in August.
They are facing a Chelsea team desperate to join Liverpool in the Champions League next season and who have been given a huge boost by Nottingham Forest's defeat to Brentford on Thursday. This means Chelsea are in control of one of the top five places, but Enzo Maresca had a strong team out on Thursday at Djurgarden in the Conference League Semi Final and that has to be a factor.
Chelsea have put the wins together at home in recent weeks, but they have not always convinced and that makes me believe they are a short price to win this game. The fact is that Chelsea have found Liverpool tough to crack in recent seasons and the away team have had a bit more time to get themselves mentally ready for a tough fixture.
A draw would not be a big surprise with each of the last 3 between the clubs at Stamford Bridge finishing with that result and it may actually be a point each that is accepted by both teams. There are quality attacking players who can provide that moment of magic to turn things in favour of their team, but Chelsea and Liverpool may end up cancelling one another out in this second live fixture to be played on Sunday afternoon.
