Newcastle United
They will feel they were the better team on the South Coast last Sunday and that is why some Newcastle United fans may believe it is two points dropped rather than one gained after the 1-1 draw with Brighton. Eddie Howe's team are still in control of one of the five Champions League spots available in the Premier League, but they have two tough fixtures coming up.
The Magpies are 4th in the Premier League table and will have been grateful to Crystal Palace for holding Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 draw and that keeps Newcastle United 2 points clear of 6th place. However, they are hosting the team directly behind them and Newcastle United will believe it is important to improve the 11-2-4 record at St James' Park with just three Premier League fixtures to play.
Newcastle United have lost 1 of their last 10 games in all competitions in normal time, but they have just hit a slight wall with 4 points earned from the last three Premier League fixtures. The majority were gained in the 3-0 win over Ipswich Town at St James' Park and Newcastle United have won 5 Premier League games in a row here.
Joelinton is expected to miss the remainder of the season, while both Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier are hoping to be passed fit.
Chelsea
Over the last two decades, Chelsea Football Club have played in a number of big European Finals and the fans will be looking forward to another later in the month. They have looked the strongest team competing in the Conference League all season, but winning silverware at any level could be important to the development of the squad and Chelsea have certainly looked to end the season with real momentum.
That Conference League Final is played at the end of the Premier League season and so full focus can be placed in trying to earn a top five finish and a return to the Champions League. The Blues moved into 5th place after beating Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last Sunday, but they are only 2 points clear of Nottingham Forest and have yet to visit the City Ground. With that in mind, Chelsea head to the North East to take on another Champions League chasing rival and to try and improve the 7-4-6 away record.
Chelsea completed the Conference League Semi Final win over Djurgarden by beating them in the Second Leg on Thursday and they have now won 5 in a row in all competitions. The side had failed to win any of 8 away Premier League games before coming from behind to score two late goals and earn a 1-2 win at Craven Cottage.
Wholesale changes were made by the manager so key players are going to be fit and ready to compete in an early Sunday kick off slot. Christopher Nkunku is not expected to travel as he continues to deal with an injury that could see him miss the remainder of the campaign.
Head to Head
Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
They did meet at St James' Park in the League Cup earlier this season and it was Newcastle United who secured a 2-0 victory.
Newcastle United have won 3 home games in a row against Chelsea.
Prediction
After results last weekend, Newcastle United and Chelsea are both on the same number of Premier League points and sitting in 4th and 5th place respectively in the standings.
The importance of this game will not be lost on either manager and finishing in the Champions League places would offer a significant financial boost to clubs that missed out during this campaign.
Eddie Howe has a bit more leeway with the board having helped Newcastle United secure a first piece of domestic silverware in seventy years, although there had been some tension with the sporting directors and where they want the club to go. A top five spot and Champions League Football would ease those tensions, although the fans are firmly behind Eddie Howe and he would be expected to be retained as manager even if The Magpies miss out.
That seems far less certain for Enzo Maresca even if Chelsea were to win the Conference League.
Chelsea have been jumping through some financial loopholes to remain on top of any PSR concerns and so the Champions League money feels very important to them. Enzo Maresca has not really got the fans on board with his style and Chelsea's recent run in the North East is not very encouraging.
Prior to the win at Fulham, Chelsea had really struggled for away results in the Premier League and this is a big test for a young squad.
The home team have had a full week to prepare for the game and Newcastle United have been putting the wins together at St James' Park, which makes them dangerous.
Both teams have been in good recent form to build confidence, but it does feel like home advantage is particularly important in this game. The draw is perhaps not the worst result for either team, but there is a real value for picking up the full three points and it may be Newcastle United who have the slight edge to earn those.
Chelsea have won 3 Premier League games in a row, but they had not been that convincing before the win over a Liverpool team that lacked their usual intensity. Even then, The Blues had been put under some pressure and a more focused Newcastle United team can find the edges in the final third to pick up a narrow victory.
