Everton
The new owners of Everton Football Club made a big announcement about the future of Goodison Park- the men's team are moving into a new home in August and, under the previous ownership, it was suggested that this famous old Stadium should be knocked down. Getting the fans on board will be key for The Friedkin Group and announcing that Goodison Park will be the new home for the women's team and the Academy may just have many around the Stadium feeling very happy.
It will still be an emotional day at Goodison Park as Everton's mens team play their last fixture here and the players will be keen to sign off with a victory. The Toffees have a 4-9-5 record at this ground in the Premier League having scored 24 goals and conceded 23 in those matches.
Everton had been struggling for wins and had not won any of 3 Premier League games before coming from behind to beat Fulham 1-3 at Craven Cottage last Saturday. They have not won any of their last 6 Premier League games at Goodison Park, although Everton have drawn 5 of those games. Everton were 2-0 up against Ipswich Town in their last game here, but were pegged back in a 2-2 draw.
Jake O'Brien is a doubt for the home team.
Southampton
Championship Football may be fast approaching for Southampton Football Club, but the players still had something to play for in the Premier League before last weekend. They were desperate to finish with more points than Derby County's record low since the formation of this Division and Southampton battled to a goalless draw with Manchester City to earn their 12th point of the campaign.
Everything seems to be settled for Southampton as far as this season is concerned with bottom place in the Premier League table confirmed. The Saints have a 1-3-14 away record where they have scored just 13 goals and conceded 37.
Southampton's draw with Manchester City extended their winless run to 13 games in all competitions, but they have picked up 3 draws in their last 7 Premier League games. They did win at Ipswich Town back in February, but Southampton have lost 4 of their last 5 away Premier League games and that includes a very disappointing 2-0 defeat at Leicester City most recently.
A full squad should be ready to travel to the North West for this early kick off.
Head to Head
Southampton have earned 12 points all season and three were from the 1-0 home win over Everton.
These two clubs also met at Goodison Park in the League Cup Third Round and the tie ended 1-1 in normal time before Southampton won the Penalty Shoot Out.
Everton have won 2 of their last 6 home games against Southampton and failed to win either of their last 2.
Prediction
Every single Everton fan has been dreading the moment when they enter Goodison Park for the last time, although some of the stronger emotions may have been cooled down after the announcement that this famous Stadium will not be knocked down.
Instead it will be a venue where football will continue to be hosted while the mens team move to Bramley-Moore Dock.
Even then, fans will arrive to say goodbye to the Stadium where Everton have hosted League matches since 1892 having moved in following a dispute that led to them leaving Anfield... Yes, that Anfield.
The new Stadium will need time for the atmosphere to even come close to rivalling what Everton have produced here and there will be plenty of motivation for the players to sign off with a victory. Having David Moyes in the dugout feels right too and Everton are looking for their first, and final, League win here since crushing Leicester City in early February.
Hosting Southampton may provide a good opportunity, especially after the visitors put in a strong defensive performance to earn one more point and avoid finishing with the joint-lowest tally in Premier League history. Credit has to be given to the way the team performed that day, but it is going to be a completely different atmosphere for Southampton on Sunday afternoon.
They were well beaten when visiting Leicester City earlier this month, and Everton looked much stronger than Ipswich Town when leading them 2-0 here on the same day. Unfortunately for David Moyes, his team conceded a goal out of nothing and could not hold on in a 2-2 draw, but Everton have shown they can score goals under Moyes' guidance and they should have too much for The Saints.
Everton do not have a good recent record when hosting Southampton, but they have scored at least twice in 5 of their last 8 home Premier League games. Hitting that mark may be enough to secure a relatively comfortable win considering what has been produced by Southampton as an attacking threat and Everton may produce one final winning performance at their home of 133 years.
