Newcastle United
For all of the tidy football and what felt like a really strong first half, Newcastle United's failure to hit the back of the net meant a 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium last Sunday. That now means two of the five Champions League places have been decided, but Eddie Howe's men are still in control of their own destiny in their bid to return to the premier UEFA run competition next season.
They are 3rd in the Premier League table, although Manchester City's result on Tuesday will impact that, and the focus for the team and the management staff is simply winning this final Premier League fixture. Do that and Newcastle United will be back in the Champions League regardless of what happens elsewhere on the final day and The Magpies have a 12-2-4 record at St James' Park this season.
Newcastle United have been in a period of dealing with inconsistent results and that is underlined by the fact they have won 2 and lost 2 of their last 5 Premier League games played. Home comforts have proved to be a difference maker for the team though and Newcastle United have won 6 Premier League games in succession in front of The Toon Army.
Kieran Trippier and Alexander Isak both missed the defeat at Arsenal, but will be hoping a full week between games allows for their availability in this important fixture.
Everton
Emotions were running high all weekend as the final men's match was set to be played at Goodison Park and the occasion was huge for the Everton fans. They will have been really pleased with the players and the performance in the 2-0 win over Southampton and Everton will soon be looking forward to opening their new Hill Dickinson Stadium in August.
The victory over Southampton has ensured Everton will finish 13th in the Premier League table and they have earned their most points and best League finish in four years. Hopes are that the owners will now invest to build upon this as Everton wrap up their League season in the North East.
Everton looked to be coasting towards the finish this season with a single win in 10 games, but they have beaten Fulham and Southampton over the last couple of weeks to provide some momentum. The win at Craven Cottage means Everton have won 2 and lost 2 of their last 4 away Premier League games.
Jarrad Branthwaite is a doubt for the away team, while Seamus Coleman is set to miss out.
Head to Head
These two teams played out a goalless draw when they met at Goodison Park in early October.
Newcastle United had beaten Everton 3 times in a row at St James' Park, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw last season.
Prediction
A win would take Newcastle United into the Champions League for the second time in three seasons, but it is unlikely to be straightforward for the home team unless they can score early on Sunday.
The longer they are level or only winning by a single goal, the more tension that could build around St James' Park and especially if news filters through that other results are not going Newcastle United's way.
However, in saying all that, Newcastle United will be pretty pleased to finish the season at St James' Park where they have been scoring goals and stringing the Premier League wins together. Having Alexander Isak back to lead the line is essential after a wasteful display at Arsenal last Sunday, but The Toon Army will lift team.
It also very much helps that Newcastle United are hosting an Everton team seven days after an emotional farewell to Goodison Park. Almost the entire focus of all involved with the club would be on making sure they win that last men's fixture at their spiritual home and there has to be a natural come down for a team that have nothing much left to play for.
Everton are assured of a 13th place finish and that may reduce some of the motivation of the team, while the energy levels could disappear if they fall behind. A missing Jarrad Branthwaite would make things that much more difficult for The Toffees and Newcastle United should have the power to come through with the three points.
They will have a respect for this Everton team considering they were only narrowly beaten in recent away games at Liverpool and Chelsea and won at Nottingham Forest. All of those teams are in and around Newcastle United so nothing can be taken for granted and that mentality should see a strong, focused home team come out and look to control the fixture from the very first whistle.
David Moyes will set his team up to make things awkward, but there is a feeling the game could get away from an emotionally spent squad if Newcastle United can score early enough. From there The Magpies should be able to impose themselves and secure another goal to make things relatively comfortable for their fans watching on.
