Tunis
They Qualified for the Club World Cup due to the overall performances in the CAF Champions League and Tunis were Quarter Finalists in that competition earlier this season. Once again Tunis have finished the season as domestic Champions so they will have another shot at trying to win the Champions League for the first time since doing it twice in a row in 2018 and 2019.
In those years, Tunis played in the Club World Cup and ended up being eliminated in the Second Round both times. With that in mind, this Group D looked a tough draw for Tunis, but they have bounced back from the opening loss to Flamengo to earn a narrow win over Los Angeles FC and that means the team have a winner takes all contest with Chelsea to join Flamengo in the next Round.
Tunis will know that the goal difference edge is with Chelsea and that means they have to win this game to have any chance of moving through to the Knock Out Rounds. They had won 3 matches in a row in all competitions before the defeat to Flamengo, but the late goal scored to win the second Group game will give the squad plenty of confidence.
Chelsea
They may not have been at their best and were once again let down by a really poor decision made by Nicolas Jackson, but Chelsea will still feel very disappointed in the 3-1 loss to Flamengo. The real blow for Enzo Maresca and his squad is that they had scored first and led at half time, but Chelsea were not able to contain the Brazilian club and now need a positive result if they are going to progress to the Second Round.
In all likelihood, Bayern Munich are going to await in the Second Round, but that is an issue for another day and it would be a huge upset if Chelsea were not able to join Flamengo in the Knock Out Rounds. The opening 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC is the result that means Chelsea just need a draw in order to finish above Tunis in the section.
Chelsea had won 4 in a row in all competitions prior to the defeat to Flamengo. Those wins had ensured a return to the UEFA Champions League for next season as well as securing the Conference League trophy, but the defeat last time out feels like a bit of a setback.
Nicolas Jackson is suspended and in danger of having that ban extended by FIFA for the poor challenge he made, which would mean potentially missing the rest of the tournament. The manager may choose to make some changes to his first eleven to freshen things up, but Liam Delap is almost certainly going to be leading the line.
Head to Head
This is the first meeting between these clubs at a competitive level.
Prediction
Both teams have earned wins over late participants Los Angeles FC and both have suffered relatively comfortable defeats to Flamengo, which leaves Tunis and Chelsea battling for second place.
Chelsea have the goal difference edge and that could really help them exploit gaps that Tunis may eventually have to leave behind.
You have to believe Chelsea have a real quality edge in the contest too, even if they were disappointing against Flamengo.
They were much better against Los Angeles FC, although conditions will be tough in Philadelphia with very warm weather and humidity expected to play their part, even with a 9pm local kick off time.
Despite that, Chelsea should still be able to create chances against this Tunis defence and they may be able to counter attack their way to a late goal or two, which may just see The Blues cover this Asian Handicap line.
