Brazil Serie A side Palmeiras will face English Premier League opposition in the shape of Chelsea in Friday night’s quarter-final in the FIFA Club World Cup when the two sides face-off at Lincoln Financial Field on American Independence Day.
Palmeiras edged out runners-up Inter Miami to claim top spot in Group A during the group stage of this competition thanks to picking up points in draws with Porto and Inter Miami in 0-0 and 2-2 stalemates, along with picking up a decisive 2-0 victory over Al Ahly, to send Abel Ferreira’s side into the knockout stage.
An extra-time 1-0 win against fellow compatriots Botafogo saw Palmeiras progress into the quarter-finals but at the expense of losing defender Gustavo Gomez who received a red card in the all-Brazilian encounter and will now be suspended.
The bigger picture shows Palmeiras have managed to capture just three wins within their last seven games overall in all competitions, losing twice and being involved in two draws.
Chelsea finished runners-up behind another Brazilian side Flamengo in Group D of the group stage of this season’s FIFA Club World Cup as Enzo Maresca’s side registered two wins and a loss from their three group games.
Victories recorded against Los Angeles and Esperance in 2-0 and 3-0 wins outweighed a 3-1 loss to Flamengo but the London club quickly returned to winning ways in the subsequent round of last 16 clash against Portuguese club Benfica as The Blues ran out comprehensive 4-1 winners.
Having suffered just a single loss in their last seven games in all competitions including picking up six wins in the process, the English club look set to at least avoid defeat against a Palmeiras outfit who’ll be missing one of their key defenders on Friday night.
The Betting Verdict
Chelsea produced a 2-1 win over Palmeiras in extra-time in the previous Club World Cup and The Blues might just sneak a narrow win here as well.
The Pick :
Palmeiras 0-1 Chelsea
