UPDATE : MATCH POSTPONED : Saturday’s fixture between Melbourne City FC and the Newcastle Jets has been postponed due to Victoria’s seven-day lockdown.
A-League leaders, Melbourne City, hold a commanding seven-point cushion over 2nd placed Sydney FC despite suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat away from home at Brisbane Roar last time out in the A-League, and the hosts will be keen to bounce back with a win at AAMI Park on Saturday evening.
Melbourne City had previously put together a solid and impressive 10-match unbeaten run which consisted of seven wins and three draws but the hosts have found clean sheets hard to come by as eight of these 10 matches also saw both teams score as well.
Nevertheless, Melbourne City have already won the Premiers Plate and sealed their place in the end of season play-offs as they possess a comfortable 10-point lead over 3rd placed Adelaide United with just two matches of the regular season remaining.
Following an early season 1-0 loss at home to Perth Glory, Melbourne City haven’t looked back since as the hosts have won nine of their subsequent 10 matches played on home soil but they’ve also managed only four clean sheets at home to date too, as eight of Melbourne City’s 12 home games have seen both teams score.
By contrast, Newcastle Jets sit rock-bottom of the A-League and a massive 22 points adrift of the top six so needless to say that The Jets won’t be featuring in the end of season play-offs this term.
Following a nightmare start to the new season, losing their first four matches on the trot, Newcastle Jets seemed to have got themselves back on track with a five-match unbeaten run which included wins against Wellington Phoenix, Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory.
However, Newcastle’s recovery didn’t last long as The Jets have failed to win any of their subsequent 14 matches thereafter, which has landed them bottom of the A-League and just marking time until the end of the season.
11 defeats within this poor 14-match stretch suggests that Newcastle Jets will have their work cut out against Melbourne City this Saturday, especially as the visitors have also failed to keep a single clean sheet in these 14 matches as well, but the visitors could at least contribute to the scoring here.
Seven of Newcastle’s 11 away matches have resulted in both teams scoring while The Jets have failed to score in just three of these 11 games on the road.
