With just one league game remaining of the regular A-League season before the Final Series play-offs, Wellington Phoenix know that the preliminary league title is still up for grabs if they take all three points against Macarthur Bulls on Friday night.
Wellington Phoenix have lost just twice in their last 16 matches overall in the A-League and having collected eight wins within this period, the New Zealand outfit look in good shape to claim the top spot in the A-League table prior to the play-offs.
Within these eight victories, Wellington registered a 2-1 win away from home at Macarthur while results on home soil at the Sky Stadium have also been impressive as the Kiwi’s have won their last five home games on the trot.
Macarthur Bulls sit in fourth place in the A-League standings but the best the visitors can hope for is a third place finish as they trail third placed Melbourne Victory by just a single point but second placed club Central Coast Mariners by an unassailable eight-point margin.
Nevertheless, Macarthur will have been boosted by their two recent wins on the trot which saw Mile Sterjovski’s side claim back-to-back wins against Adelaide United and Sydney FC but although the visitors had previously put together a stubborn unbeaten run of seven games earlier in the season from early January through to mid-February, subsequent results have produced a mixed bag.
In their subsequent nine games overall, Macarthur have picked up four wins, drawn once and lost the other three games but the visitors have suffered just one loss in their last seven outings on their travels.
