Heard of Superbowl hangover?
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
14-9 was the score when the Saints finally beat the Vikings 10 days ago. I expected them to have won by more, but they didn't. You'd like to big up the Vikings, but they lost to Miami 15-10 this week, so clearly it's not such a big deal New Orleans to have won.
The Saints kicker, Garrett Hartley, missed a couple of field goals in the Superdome against Minnesota. Now he goes to San Francisco, where the winds play a big factor. The 49ers have a strong defence, that failed to turn up last week, and an offence that failed to do what they are capable of.
This number smells funny. Why only -5? It's not a trap. Bookies don't do that. They want equal action on both sides of the number, thats all they care about. It's just that the general public is clearly nailing the favourite, leaving the line where it is. Monday night is where most bettors throw their winnings, or chase their losses. So I'm going to go against them and follow my gut feeling.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
This 49ers team has been hyped to win the NFC West, and with good reason. Yet, they got gunned down by Seattle 31-6. As I said yesterday in the Seattle @ Denver preview, Seattle got away with a fluke and they proved it by getting bent over by Denver. That clearly means San Francisco isn't as bad as they looked last week. Can you really see a team touted to win their division doing rubbish 2 weeks running?
Mike Singletary is a very very good coach. He's going to be pretty furious with his teams disgraceful performance last week. Losing to Seattle is just not on. But again, my reason for betting on the 49ers won't be because they will be trying hard to win due to the loss. Any team would do that. It comes down that number, -5
BETTING VERDICT
So, the Patriots destroy the Bengals, and the fancied Jets lose their opener, and I, along with many others, fall for the overreaction in the number. Patriots favs by 3 points, and they get done by the Jets.
Seattle blow out the 49ers, and the number is affected this week, where they are only 3 point dogs. What happens? Denver turns them over.
Chicago try to give the game to Detroit, look poor and luckily win. What do they do to Dallas? See where I'm going?
The 49ers don't even have to win this game, just keep it close. This could very well be decided by a field goal, if you go by talent alone. This game is played across the country from NO, and the 49ers as we know will be leaving it all on the field to avoid starting the season 0-2. If you want insurance, buy points and take SF 49ers +7, but I think they keep it closer.
And don't say you weren't warned if they go and win outright.
