Denmark
Despite their loss to Portugal, Morten Olsen’s side is still in cards to progress. They will continue their journey with any win, a draw will only be good enough if Portugal lose.
The problem is that they are facing Germany here, a team that still has work to do to ensure qualification, so their Denmark’s job will be difficult. Varela’s goal three minutes from time may have cost them the qualification if Germany confirm their status and win this.
Denmark did a fine job to cancel out a two goal lead against Portugal, but Paolo Bento’s men came good in the end thanks to a goal from substitute Varela.
Nicklas Bendtner could have been Denmark’s hero, but his efforts were in vain as his team didn’t get anything out of the game. Bendtner reduced the deficit four minutes before halftime and completed the recovery with his second header nine minutes from the end at his 50th appearance for Denmark.
Like losing the match wasn’t enough, Morten Olsen also lost two of his regulars as Dennis Rommedahl (hamstring) and Niki Zimling (calf) went off with injuries against Portugal.
Probable Denmark line-up :
Andersen
Jacobsen, Kjaer, Agger, Poulsen
Kvist, Poulsen
Krohn-Dehli, Eriksen, Mikkelsen
Bendtner
Germany
Despite winning both their games so far, Germany are not quite through, but will be as group winners if they win or draw. The only way they could be knockout out is if they lose to Denmark by any result other than a one-goal defeat in which Germany score at least two and Portugal win against Netherlands.
Germany was in total control of their previous match against Netherlands and Mario Gomez’s two superb first-half goals were enough to secure Joachim Low side’s second victory in the group. Mario Gomez actually scored all Germany’s goals so far, he netted the decisive goal against Portugal too.
Even if they are not 100% through yet, Loachim Low could rest some of his regulars according to some publications. The thing is that he can do it without weakening the squad because he has so many quality players on the bench.
Jerome Boateng will miss this one out, he is suspended after bookings in the first two games. Badstuber is a yellow card away from a ban. Can’t say for sure but with Boateng missing the logical move would be to play Marcel Schmelzer as a left back and move Lahm to the right.
Probable Germany line-up :
Neuer
Lahm, Badstuber, Hummels, Schmelzer
Schweinsteiger, Kroos
Gotze, Ozil, Schurrle,
Klose
The Betting Verdict
Germany could be the only team to finish the group stages with maximum points and that could send out a clear message about their intentions in this competition and whatever Loachim Low decides regarding the changes in his squad a victory against Denmark shouldn’t be that much of a challenge.
Portugal and Holland created/wasted a lot of opportunities against this Denmark side that seemed shaky in defense at some points in those games, so a German team that is a lot more efficient shouldn’t have problems to score in this one.
Denmark needs to win here, but that is not an argument in my opinion, Netherlands had to win as well against Germany and we all saw what happened in that match.
I expect Germany to control the game once again, with the Bayern duo Kroos - Schweinsteiger in the centre of their midfield they should be solid in that area. I know a point will do it, but don’t think Germany will settle for a draw, not against Denmark.
