It may not have been the best of starts to the League Cup Group Stage, but St Mirren will not be overly concerned about the draw with Arbroath. With three games left in the section, and the chance to host their most likely rivals for top spot, St Mirren have time to turn things back in their favour.
Of course they do have to bounce back having lost the Penalty Shoot Out on Saturday, which means they only earned a single point and it was Arbroath who picked up the bonus point. Again, this should not be a major worry for the Scottish Premiership club, although there is some pressure on the players to make sure they secure three points in the next Group fixture.
That fixture is to be hosted by League Two Forfar Athletic who also played out a draw in the opening Group game against Annan Athletic. However, Forfar Athletic were able to secure the win on Penalties, which means being on 2 points and above St Mirren ahead of the fixture to be played.
Despite being a League Two club, Forfar Athletic had some successes in the League Cup Group Stage last season and the year before they only finished behind St Mirren on goal difference. The difference was the 4-0 defeat at St Mirren Park, but this time Forfar Athletic may feel that hosting the tie gives them a much bigger chance of earning the upset.
The end of last season was a disappointment for Forfar Athletic, especially when considering the home form, and they have to expect a big reaction from St Mirren following the opening results. Last season Forfar Athletic were pretty well beaten at home by Livingston, who were then playing in the Scottish Championship, and this remains a serious gap to bridge.
It has been almost forty years since Forfar Athletic last hosted St Mirren and they did earn a 5-1 victory in the Scottish League Cup in August 1986.
Prediction
The opening results in the Scottish League Cup continued to pull up plenty of upsets, as has been the norm since this new format was put in place.
St Mirren will have been disappointed with the goalless draw at Arbroath, but they can bounce back by securing a relatively comfortable win at the home of League Two Forfar Athletic.
The hosts deserve some respect having put up some decent League Cup performances over the last couple of years and beginning with a draw at Annan Athletic. However, Forfar Athletic have been pretty well beaten by Livingston and St Mirren in that time and the Scottish Premiership team may have a bit too much quality having put a match under the legs.
