Montrose got themselves off to a losing start in the group stage of this season’s Scottish League Cup as the upcoming hosts suffered a 2-1 loss away from home at Alloa Athletic but The Gable Endies now have a chance to redeem themselves on Saturday afternoon when they entertain Bonnyrigg Rose at Links Park.
Montrose had previously put together a promising pre-season as the hosts went unbeaten in the four fixtures they played; wins against Deveronvale and Huntly along with draws shared with Forfar Athletic and Civil Service Strollers should still give Stewart Petrie’s side a boost for this fixture.
As both Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic have picked up wins in each of their opening two group games, Montrose know they must pick up all three points here at Links Park if they’re to have any chance of progressing to the play-offs stage.
Bonnyrigg Rose suffered relegation from the Scottish League Two at the end of last season following a 3-1 defeat over two legs in the relegation/promotion play-offs against Lowland League side, East Kilbride.
The visitors’ bad luck has continued into the early stages of this new season as well, as Bonnyrigg Rose were dealt a 3-2 defeat away from home at Stenhousemuir in a pre-season friendly along with back-to-back losses in the group stage of this season’s League Cup.
Losses inflicted upon them by the likes of Alloa Athletic and Airdrieonians respectively have dumped Bonnyrigg at the bottom of the Group C table and another tough fixture looks to be waiting for them at Links Park on Saturday afternoon.
Hopes are not particularly high though as Bonnyrigg Rose finished bottom of last season’s Group D table.
