Football: Scottish League Cup Group Stage
Tuesday 22nd July 2025 - Kick Off 7:45pm
Preview
Group A of the Scottish League Cup is proving to be a very competitive section of the tournament and there are four clubs who will still believe they can progress to the Second Round.
The favourite remains Premiership Falkirk and that is because they will round out the Group with two home games- win both and they should top the section, despite the disappointing goalless draw at Cove Rangers this past weekend.
At least Falkirk won the Penalty Shoot Out to earn the bonus point to sit just a point behind The Spartans and the top flight club remain on course for a spot in the Second Round.
This may be the toughest game left for Falkirk as they host Queen's Park who have bounced back from an opening defeat to The Spartans to crush overmatched Brechin City 5-0 at home. Two wins would be expected to be good enough for Queen's Park to move into the Knock Out Rounds too, but beating Falkirk proved tough for them when these two clubs were playing int he same Division last season.
In the 4 League meetings, Falkirk won 3 and the last of those matches was the most comfortable when beating Queen's Park 0-4 at Lesser Hampden. Giving the second tier team some confidence will be the fact that they were able to earn a draw here at Falkirk Stadium, while only narrowly being beaten 2-1 in the other visit.
Queen's Park are on a poor run without a win in 6 away games in all competitions having conceded two late goals to blow the lead when playing The Spartans earlier in this Group. They have been beaten in 4 of the last 6 on their travels in all competitions and so it is a tall task for them to earn a positive result here, although the expectation is that Queen's Park will be competitive.
This is the opening home game of the season for Falkirk who ended the last campaign with 5 victories in their final 7 fixtures in front of the supporters.
Prediction
It is all to play for in Group A after three rounds of fixtures, but this one between Falkirk and Queen's Park may go a long way to determining the Group Winner.
Winning out has to be the focus for both clubs and so a competitive affair is expected.
Falkirk did crush Queen's Park at Lesser Hampden in March, which is the most recent meeting between the clubs, but the first 3 League fixtures were very competitive last season. That includes Queen's Park earning a draw here and only narrowly losing the other fixture and it may be worth backing the Championship club to keep this close, even if they are eventually beaten.
