Germany

Germany started their EURO 2024 campaign in a dominant fashion, demolishing Scotland 5-1 and showing superb performance. Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, the backup striker Nicklas Fullkrug, and even defensive midfielder Emre Can scored in that game. The confidence is sky-high in the team, and I expect Germany to provide more of the same in this second game.

Many now believe that the perfect start can give Germany wings for the remainder of the tournament. A quick reminder – at the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, Germany also started with a strong performance and a 4-0 win over Portugal, with that win setting the tone for the rest of the tournament when Germany became a World Champion.

A win in this match will secure the top spot in the group for Germany, so the motivation is high. Also, Germany has old debts to settle, as Hungary remained unbeaten in two games against Germany in the UEFA Nations League in 2022, drawing 1-1 and winning 0-1 away.

Germany has a fully fit and ready squad for this game, and coach Nagelsmann is unlikely to change anything from the starting line-up that faced Scotland last Friday. Perhaps one player that could change is Robert Andrich, who picked up a yellow card in the first game. Nagelsmann replaced him with Pascal Gross at half-time and now might give Gross a chance from the start.

Despite scoring as a substitute, Niclas Fullkrug will likely be on the bench again, with Kai Havertz leading the attack again. Havertz is a pretty good option for anytime goalscorer at odds of 2.25. Keep in mind that Havertz has scored nine goals and provided four goal assists in his last 18 matches for Germany and has scored in each of his last three games.

Hungary

Hungary convincingly lost 1-3 to Switzerland in the first round, showing a weak performance. However, that does not have to mean anything. They will likely be motivated in this match, with five of their standard players playing in the Bundesliga and knowing the German way of playing.

Interestingly, Germany’s coach Nagelsmann said that Hungary is an “awkward opponent,” whatever that might mean. I believe he thinks they are unpredictable, you never know what face they will show.

One thing is for sure – if Hungary loses this match, they are unlikely to progress out of this group. Of course, many things will depend on their last game with Scotland, but things will not look good if they get hammered by the Germans.

Similar to Germany, not many, if any, changes are expected in Hungary's line-up for this game. They are likely to counter the Germans, trying to be more compact defensively, but they did not look good in the defense in the first game.

Interestingly, Hungary has remained unbeaten in five of their last six games against Germany played on German soil.

With the way Germany played in the first game and Hungary’s defensive weaknesses, we might see another high-scoring game here.

Germany played fluidly and almost perfectly in the first match against Scotland, and we should expect the same in this game. The second win will lock Germany’s spot in the Round of 16, and I believe they will win in style again - back the Germans to win at half-time and full-time.
