Netherlands
They had to weather something of an early storm from Romania, but Netherlands never looked back after scoring the first goal in the Last 16 tie. The only criticism the team could face is perhaps failing to score a second goal until very late on, despite the chances created, and Netherlands may just need to be a little more clinical if they are going to match the achievement of the 1988 squad that won the European Championships in West Germany.
It has been a mixed tournament for Netherlands who really failed to impress in their 2-3 defeat to Austria in the final Group game. That match was after they battled to a pretty fortunate goalless draw with France after coming from behind to beat Poland, but the 3-0 win over Romania will have given the entire squad a boost in confidence.
Netherlands have won 4 of their last 6 games and earning clean sheets in half of the 4 games played at Euro 2024 will always give a team a chance of winning matches. The defeat to Austria was a touch concerning in the manner it occurred, but Ronald Koeman might just have learned to trust his best eleven.
Changes are unlikely for this Quarter Final, although Donyell Malen will feel very disappointed if he is not starting after scoring twice in the Last 16 win.
Turkey
Goals change matches and there is little doubt that Turkey's goal inside the first minute against Austria allowed them to play with a lot more freedom. They were holding on by the end, but Turkey have once again moved through to a Quarter Final at a major international tournament and will deserve to be respected.
The save from Mert Gunok in the final seconds of the win over Austria will go down in European Championship history and preserved Turkey's 2-1 win in the Last 16. That means they have now beaten Georgia, Czechia and Austria in Germany, although Turkey were defeated pretty comfortably by Portugal in the middle of the Group Stage.
Turkey had not won any of 5 games prior to the Euro 2024 Finals beginning and there was some pressure on manager Vincenzo Montella. This tournament performance may give Montella an opportunity to lead Turkey into the next Nations League and perhaps into the World Cup Qualifiers with his team scoring at least twice in all of their wins at this tournament.
Orkun Kokcu and Ismail Yuksek are both suspended having picked up second bookings, but Captain Hakan Calhanoglu is back. One worry for Turkey fans ahead of the Quarter Final is a potential ban for Merih Demiral who scored twice in the win over Austria, but who has been caught making a gesture that could be considered offensive by UEFA.
Head to Head
These two nations were in the same 2022 World Cup Qualifying Group and both Turkey and Netherlands secured high-scoring home wins over the other.
Turkey had been unbeaten in two Qualifying matches ahead of Euro 2016 against Netherlands and had been unbeaten in 3 against them before losing in Amsterdam in September 2021.
Prediction
The Last 16 tie against Austria saw Turkey looking to avenge a 6-1 defeat to the same opponent in their last meeting.
A 2-1 win saw Turkey edge into the Quarter Final and they are facing another opponent who beat them 6-1 the last time they met, although that defeat to Netherlands was almost three years ago.
It was a World Cup Qualifier and was later in the Group after Turkey had already beaten Netherlands 4-2 at home and there is every chance that this could be the highest scoring of the four Quarter Finals to be played at Euro 2024.
Both teams have shown an attacking edge that has seen them score plenty of goals, but neither is the most convincing at the back.
Out of the two teams, there does feel like being a bit more about Netherlands as a defensive team having earned clean sheets in half of their 4 tournament matches. The approach taken by Turkey is almost certainly going to challenge those defensive numbers and this is a team that plays with energy to force mistakes and has set piece takers that will certainly feel they can create chances for their team.
However, Turkey have not been that solid defensively and that is where the Netherlands feel like they have the edge.
There is more pressure on Netherlands who will be favoured to win and they handled that expectation pretty well against Romania. Ronald Koeman will want his team to be more clinical when they get into strong positions in the final third, and they will need to be if they are going to make sure they do not leave the door open for Turkey.
Seeing at least three goals shared out between the teams has to be the expectation, while the lean is with Netherlands to just do enough to earn a spot in the Semi Final. The defeat to Austria is hard to ignore, but Netherlands may have learned from that and they can beat a Turkey team that will give up big chances at the back.
Turkey are dangerous, but Netherlands have just shown a bit more defensively throughout the tournament and that could show up in this last Quarter Final.
