Aston Villa
Unai Emery's men were disappointed that they failed to capitalise on their chances in the 0-2 home defeat to Arsenal last month, but winning at Leicester City keeps Aston Villa chugging along nicely. Following up the impressive top four finish from last season is always going to be challenging, but the squad looks up to the task ahead of their return to European Cup/Champions League Football next week.
There are some exciting ties coming up for Aston Villa, although fans were less excited about the extremely high pricing structure the club have set for those wishing to watch Champions League Football at Villa Park. The players cannot allow those issues to distract them as the team return from the September international break in 7th place and with 6 points on the board.
Aston Villa's home form was key to their top four finish last season, but both wins in this campaign have been away from home at West Ham United and Leicester City. That makes the home loss to Arsenal feel a little ironic, and Aston Villa have now failed to win any of their last 4 played at Villa Park in all competitions.
Leon Bailey suffered a hamstring injury against Leicester City and will likely miss at least the remainder of this month, but Ollie Watkins should be able to play having been withdrawn from the England squad. Matty Cash is expected back later in September, while both Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara are edging closer to returns after long-term injuries.
Everton
The new Stadium, Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, is coming along nicely for Everton, but there is a considerable fear that the first game to be played there will be a League game in the second tier of English Football. Sean Dyche and the players will still be feeling pretty sick after the 2-3 loss to Bournemouth two weeks ago, especially when you point out that Everton were leading 2-0 with 86 minutes ticked over.
The fans, the players and most onlookers could not believe the collapse at the end of that home game and it leaves Everton pointless and in 20th place in the Premier League table. After a season in which they overcame real difficulties to avoid relegation, Everton fans were hoping for a much more stress-free campaign and it looks like it is going to be anything but that.
Everton beat Doncaster Rovers in the League Cup Second Round days before taking a 2-0 lead over Bournemouth, but the 2-3 defeat means 3 straight Premier League defeats in which they have conceded at least three goals. The Toffees have not won any of 12 away Premier League games ahead of this live televised offering, and Everton have lost 8 of those matches.
Seamus Coleman missed Republic of Ireland's second Nations League game and is a doubt, while new signing Armando Broja is set to return next month. Both Nathan Patterson and Jarrad Branthwaite may need to miss at least one more Premier League match as they look to overcome injuries of their own.
Head to Head
Aston Villa were able to take 4 points from Everton in the Premier League last season with the majority earned from a 4-0 win at Villa Park.
They had won 3 in a row against Everton at home, but in September 2023, The Toffees beat Aston Villa 1-2 here in the League Cup.
Prediction
The second live Premier League game for the United Kingdom audience on Saturday is going to be played at Villa Park and Aston Villa will be looking for a much better result than their 0-2 defeat to Arsenal last month.
The performance on the day was actually pretty good and Aston Villa were unlucky to lose, while the win at Leicester City two weeks ago will just have helped the squad get back on the horse.
Fans and players will be all saddled up and raring to go when the Champions League begins on Tuesday with Aston Villa's trip to Young Boys, but they want to make playing in that competition a regular fixture around Villa Park. Unai Emery will be reminding his players that they cannot ignore Premier League form if they want to be a part of the Champions League going forward and so this is an important game for The Villains.
The same can be very much said of Everton as they look to recover from a sickening 2-3 home loss to Bournemouth. A defeat alone would have hurt, but losing when leading 2-0 after 86 minutes is a bitter blow and you could see the shock all around Goodison Park when the final whistle was blown.
Sean Dyche will retain the support of the board for now, but he needs some big results and soon with Everton being linked with David Moyes as a potential replacement.
Last season it was Goodison Park where Everton really got their survival bid going and so losing to Brighton and Bournemouth will have hurt. More concerning is the amount of goals being conceded and Everton are expected to be without Seamus Coleman and Jarrad Branthwaite this week.
It makes it tough to see how they can contain Aston Villa in front of their own supporters and a fourth straight home League win is expected. 2 of the last 3 Aston Villa League wins over Everton at Villa Park have been by very wide margins and the home team can be backed to move into the Champions League Group Stage with another relatively straight-forward win over this opponent this weekend.
