Everton

There may not have been a massive enthusiasm about reappointing David Moyes as manager of Everton, but the fans wanted to move on from Sean Dyche and will know that the club need a steady pair of hands that can ensure Everton are not opening their new Stadium as a Championship team. Some positives can be taken from the 0-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Wednesday, but plenty of negatives remain after the Sean Dyche era came to a close.

Fortunately for Everton, this was a week in which all of the teams below them also were beaten and that means The Toffees are still in 16th place in the Premier League table and a point clear of the drop zone. Even with a game in hand this will feel too close for comfort as Everton take another shot at improving their 2-4-4 home record.

Everton have made it past League One Peterborough United in the FA Cup Third Round, but the defeat to Aston Villa makes it 3 straight Premier League losses and all without scoring a goal. The side have now failed to score in 5 of their last 7 home Premier League games, while Everton have not won any of their last 3 League games at Goodison Park and suffered consecutive defeats.

Seamus Coleman is expected to miss out, while both James Garner and Dwight McNeil may only be ready to return next weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur

There are few clubs around Europe that can create the headlines that Manchester United make, but Tottenham Hotspur fans have to be seriously concerned about the direction of their own club having slipped behind United in the Premier League standings during the week. If many feel Manchester United are in crisis, what is the feeling around this Tottenham Hotspur team?

Ange Postecoglou looks to retain the backing of the board, but the fans are edgy and the manager has admitted that excuses cannot be made and only a positive reaction on the pitch will make the difference now. The side have fallen to 14th in the Premier League table and only Wolves, Leicester City and Southampton have lost more games than Tottenham Hotspur. They head to the North West with a 3-1-6 away record in the top flight after losing at Arsenal on Wednesday.

Tottenham Hotspur are enjoying some Cup successes as Postecoglou looks to make good on his statement of 'always' winning a trophy in his second season, but the loss at Arsenal means they have won 1 of their last 9 Premier League fixtures. The real concern is that Tottenham Hotspur have lost 6 of their last 8 to slip down the table, while they have also been beaten in 3 of their last 4 away League games played.

Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson are both doubts, but Ben Davies may be ready to return to action. Timo Werner is expected back next month, while others may be ready to overcome knocks of their own before the end of January.

Head to Head

Tottenham Hotspur crushed Everton 4-0 at home back in August.

They did lead here twice last season before conceding in injury time in a 2-2 draw which means the last 5 Premier League games at Goodison Park between Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have ended with the points shared.

However, in 3 of those 5 matches, Everton have scored an injury time equaliser.

Prediction

Backing the 'under' in Everton games has been a very productive way to get involved in their matches and that continues to be the case even after the Sacking of Sean Dyche.

However, the fans may feel there were more threatening moments created against Aston Villa than had been the case in recent fixtures.

David Moyes, the new manager in charge at Goodison Park, has admitted his team need to find goals and cannot hope for a saviour to be signed in the January transfer window. Make no mistake that Everton will be looking to bring in the right player if it makes sense, but Moyes is trying to get more out of an underachieving squad.

He is again without Dwight McNeil, but Everton are facing an injury hit Tottenham Hotspur team that make plenty of mistakes at the back. Set pieces is another avenue that Tottenham Hotspur can be exploited and they are seriously lacking some confidence right now having won 1 of their last 9 Premier League games and losing 6 of their last 8.

Ange Postecoglou may have Ben Davies back, but his squad remains without a number of first team players.

Excuses are running out for the manager and he needs his attacking players to step up and ease the burden on the young defensive players. That has happened at home, without the positive results to follow, but Tottenham Hotspur have not been at their best on their travels and this is a tough place to play.

In saying that, Tottenham Hotspur will be encouraged by the chances and positions that Aston Villa got into on Wednesday and this may be a rare game at Goodison Park that features more than two goals.

Games between Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have tended to produce plenty of goals with both teams expected to create problems for the other when going forward. This season does feel different for Everton, but there were signs that David Moyes can get a bit more out of the squad than Sean Dyche was managing to do and backing at least three goals looks a decent approach to this Sunday fixture.
