Brighton v Everton
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 25th January 2025 - Kick Off 3pm

Brighton

Five years ago it might have been a result that surprised many and made headlines, but it shows how far Brighton have come that a 1-3 win at Old Trafford did not raise too many eyebrows. In recent years Brighton have enjoyed visits to that part of the North West and Fabian Hurzeler will be looking for this team to back up recent wins with another one at the Amex Stadium to really build some momentum.

The Seagulls are 9th in the Premier League table and the ambition of the club is to return to any of the three UEFA run competitions next season having played in the Europa League twelve months ago. Improving the 3-6-1 record at the Amex Stadium will be key for Brighton who are just 4 points behind 6th placed Newcastle United.

Brighton are unbeaten in 7 games in all competitions, but had been struggling for wins before producing 3 in a row heading into this weekend. Prior to the Cup success at Norwich City and the Premier League wins at Ipswich Town and Manchester United, Brighton had not won any of 8 games in all competitions. All of the last 3 wins have been away from the Amex Stadium and Brighton have not won any of 4 Premier League games here since coming from behind to beat Manchester City in November.

Jack Hinshelwood, Mats Wieffer and Evan Ferguson are hoping to be involved as they close in on a return from injury.

Everton

The attacking side of Everton's game had looked seriously blunt in the last few weeks under Sean Dyche, but David Moyes has come in and sparked something positive from the squad. After creating plenty of decent chances against Aston Villa without converting, Everton were able to score three times in the first half in their victory over Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday and moved a little clearer of the relegation zone.

They may still be 16th in the Premier League table, but it was a very good weekend for Everton who saw all 4 teams below them fall to defeat. This means Everton are now 4 points clear of the bottom three, and the team will make the long journey down to the South Coast with a 1-4-5 away record in the top flight.

Everton had lost 3 straight Premier League games before overwhelming Tottenham Hotspur in the first half at Goodison Park last weekend. A 0-2 win at Portman Road in the Premier League has been followed by 6 games without a victory on their travels and Everton have lost half of those matches. The lack of goals has been clear and The Toffees have scored a single goal in those 6 away Premier League fixtures.

Dwight McNeil is hoping to be involved this weekend, but both Seamus Coleman and James Garner have to wait a little longer.

Head to Head

Ashley Young was sent off on the opening weekend and Everton were crushed 0-3 by Brighton at Goodison Park.

The away team has dominated the result in recent fixtures between Brighton and Everton and none of the last 8 between the clubs have ended with a home victory.

Everton had won 2 in a row at the Amex Stadium, but conceded in injury time in a 1-1 draw here last season.

Prediction

An immediate impact has been made by David Moyes on his return to Goodison Park as manager of Everton and the club will believe the Scotsman can keep them in the Premier League.

This is all that matters for Everton under their new ownership and the board will feel they can build this club in the summer and move forward.

Avoiding relegation will still take some work, even after a positive weekend where Everton were victorious while the four clubs below them were all beaten. The 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur will offer plenty of encouragement, but consistency in the final third is still going to be challenging for Everton to put together and they have really struggled for goals on their travels.

At least the players may feel better about playing at the Amex Stadium where Everton have earned some big results in recent seasons.

They are unbeaten in 4 visits to this Stadium, but Everton are facing a Brighton team that have won 3 in a row in all competitions and just restored some lost confidence of their own.

All 3 wins have been away from home and Brighton have not won any of their last 4 here in the Premier League since recovering to beat Manchester City. They have been a little unfortunate in the draws with Southampton and Brentford, but Brighton have to show a bit more consistency in the final third if they are going to break down this Everton defence.

A new manager may mean a slightly new approach from Everton, although realistically David Moyes is going to want his team to be as tough to beat as Sean Dyche did.

This may give Brighton the onus to get forward and back up results from the last two weeks and The Seagulls may snap the recent sequence of positive away results when Brighton and Everton have faced each other.

A narrow win for Brighton looks the most likely outcome when this fixture is played on Saturday and one goal may be all it takes to secure the three points.
