Liverpool

There is a feeling that playing a Cup Final days after an emotional exit from the Champions League is the perfect game for Liverpool. The Penalty Shoot Out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain will have stung the fans, and you could see the emotions in some of the key players at the end of the fixture, which will be something to consider ahead of the League Cup Final.

Barring something extraordinary happening, Liverpool will have to remind themselves that they are going to end this season as English Champions and picking up the first silverware of the campaign will just ease some of the pain of the European exit. They did win the League Cup last year and Liverpool have only lost 1 of their last 11 ties in this competition.

Liverpool's 7 game unbeaten run in all competitions was ended on Tuesday when losing 0-1 in regular time to Paris Saint-Germain. They will head to Wembley Stadium knowing they have not lost any of their last 4 games played away from Anfield, while Liverpool have won the last two at Manchester City and in Paris with clean sheets.

Playing Extra Time and then Penalties will mean Arne Slot has to judge the fitness of some of the players. Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are expected to miss out, but Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up an injury that is almost certainly going to see him miss the Final. Ibrahima Konate is another doubt.

Newcastle United

Two years ago, Newcastle United reached the Final of the League Cup but conceded twice in the first half and were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United to prolong the wait for silverware. Generations of fans have not have that opportunity to see Newcastle United win a trophy, but Eddie Howe is hoping to change all that after reaching the League Cup Final again.

The last time Newcastle United won a major trophy in England was all the way back in 1955 in the FA Cup and the Final on Sunday is the last chance to change that in 2025, seventy years later. The League Cup run began with a Penalty Shoot Out win at Nottingham Forest, but Newcastle United did follow that up by winning 5 ties in a row and they have conceded just a single goal in that run.

Newcastle United were able to win 0-1 at the London Stadium on Monday evening after previously winning 1 of 4 games in all competitions. The side have recently lost away games at Manchester City and Liverpool, although Newcastle United have won 7 of their last 9 away from St James' Park.

Lewis Hall and Sven Botman are both out with injury with the former expected to miss the remainder of the season. Anthony Gordon is serving the second of a three game suspension, while Alexander Isak is set to lead the line.

Head to Head

Liverpool beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield at the end of February.

They had already met at St James' Park in the Premier League in December and played out an entertaining 3-3 draw.

Liverpool have won 7 of their last 8 games against Newcastle United, while they are now unbeaten in 17 against this opponent.

Prediction

The first major trophy in English Football will be handed out on Sunday at Wembley Stadium and both Liverpool and Newcastle United have some questions to answer.

For The Magpies, the weight of history and expectation can be extremely heavy to carry around, even if the majority of players may not be from the North East of England. Despite that, the squad will be well aware that seventy years will have passed at the end of this season since Newcastle United won a major trophy in England and many will be hoping to use the experience of losing to Manchester United two years ago to inspire them to better that result.

Injuries and suspension means Newcastle United are going to have to dig in, but some may feel they come into this one in better shape than Liverpool.

It would have been tough having played in the Champions League and being forced to play through Extra Time and then Penalties, but the challenge is bigger for Liverpool having been Knocked Out in the Last 16. There was plenty of emotion in the stands and on the field at the end of the defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, while Liverpool are expected to be without Trent Alexander-Arnold and have doubts about Ibrahima Konate.

Players have to be feeling some fatigue and there had been signs of that in the win over Southampton last Saturday.

This is something that Newcastle United have to exploit, but things won't be easy against a Liverpool attack that has found a way to expose the defensive problems that Eddie Howe's men have picked up.

Losing Anthony Gordon for the Final is a huge blow too, but Newcastle United do have energetic players that can make a difference for them.

5 of the last 6 League Cup Finals have finished with fewer than three goals scored and the under 2.5 goals price looks too big here. Both teams will be aware of the emotions and pressure the other will be under and so taking too many early risks looks unlikely and a tighter than expected League Cup Final could develop, which follows recent history in this game.
