Football: English Premier League
Saturday 15th March 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
Manchester City
Pep Guardiola's future is not going to be tied to where Manchester City finish this season, but the manager has made it clear that there is an importance attached to finishing in the Champions League places. With the top five likely to be invited into that competition, there will be no excuses for Manchester City to miss out, even after the disappointing 1-0 defeat at the City Ground last weekend.
The financial hearing brought against the club by the Premier League is expected to release the results before the end of the season, but the Manchester City players have to focus on the football. They can still win the FA Cup, albeit needing to get through a tricky looking away Quarter Final at Bournemouth, while Manchester City are 5th in the Premier League table and ahead of Newcastle United on goal difference. The side have a 8-2-3 record at the Etihad Stadium this season where they have scored 28 goals and conceded 17.
Manchester City have been inconsistent over the last couple of months and that is backed up by the fact that they have won 6 and lost 6 of their last 12 games in all competitions. Some of those defeats have been against elite clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid (twice), Arsenal and Liverpool, but also underlines Manchester City's drop off this season. Home form has been stronger with 6 wins in 8 games played at the Etihad Stadium in all competitions.
Nathan Ake, John Stones and Manuel Akanji are expected to miss at least April before any potential return. Oscar Bobb could use the March international break to get through final preparation for a return from a long-term injury.
Brighton
A late Penalty to beat European chasing rivals Fulham has continued the momentum that Brighton have picked up after their 7-0 embarrassing defeat at Nottingham Forest. They have a chance for revenge against Forest in the FA Cup Quarter Final to be played later this month, while Fabian Hurzeler's team can really make a case for challenging for a spot in the Champions League if they can win on Saturday.
They have quietly moved up into 7th place in the Premier League table and Brighton are only 3 points behind Chelsea in 4th place with some big games to come against European rivals in the next month. The Seagulls have a 6-4-4 record away from the Amex Stadium and Brighton have scored 25 goals in those matches.
Brighton are unbeaten in 6 games in all competitions following the defeat at the City Ground in early February and they have won 5 of those fixtures in normal time with the exception being an Extra Time win at Newcastle United in the FA Cup Fifth Round. They have won 3 of their last 4 away Premier League games with the exception being that stand out result at Nottingham Forest.
Tariq Lamptey is available after serving a suspension, while Lewis Dunk, Joel Veltman and Matt O'Riley are hoping to join the squad following injury.
Head to Head
Brighton came from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Amex Stadium in November.
Manchester City have been solid when hosting this opponent though and have beaten Brighton 10 times in a row at home.
Prediction
If you had told Manchester City and Brighton fans back in August that this would be a big game for both when they meet just before the March international break, that may not have come as a big surprise.
Both fanbases would have had pretty big expectations, but Manchester City have fallen short of those and Brighton are perhaps 'overachieving'.
Instead of a title challenge and a push for any European place, Manchester City and Brighton, two FA Cup Quarter Finalists, are only two places apart and both have to be targeting a place in the Champions League.
There is only a single point between Manchester City and Brighton and so this is an important game for Pep Guardiola and Fabian Hurzeler.
Momentum is with Brighton having put together a 6 game unbeaten run during which time they have won 5 times, and recent away Premier League form has been positive despite the big loss at Nottingham Forest.
Manchester City have found it tough with the squad looking old overnight and injuries at the back and they have split their last 12 games evenly between wins and losses. That will have dented the confidence, but Manchester City have been a bit more consistent at home where they have won 6 of 8 games in all competitions and the defeats have been to Real Madrid and Liverpool.
Erling Haaland missed the latter of those fixtures, but he is back and Manchester City have the majority of their attacking players ready to compete.
No European Football for the remainder of the season may actually help in the push for a return to the Champions League and Manchester City's dominant home record against Brighton has to be considered too.
Unlike Nottingham Forest, Brighton play a bit more expansive football and that is surely going to suit Manchester City who have the players in the final third that can help secure an important three points in a game that sees the home team need to score at least twice.
