Leicester City
Three of the bottom four teams picked up vital Premier League points on Tuesday or Wednesday, but Leicester City are the odd one out and now odds on to drop into the Championship in May. The Southampton draw with Crystal Palace would have made little impact, but that is not the case with Wolves and Ipswich Town both winning and Ruud van Nistelrooy's team have not been able to find the standard needed to compete.
The Foxes are 19th in the Premier League table and they are 12 points from safety with a vastly inferior goal difference and there are just eight fixtures left to play. The 2-3-10 record at the King Power Stadium has not been good enough and Leicester City's problems are there for all to see when noting they have just 11 goals in those fixtures.
Leicester City were 2-0 down at Manchester City before the half hour mark and they have lost 8 matches in a row in all competitions and 7 of those have been in the Premier League. Playing at home offers little feeling of relief and Leicester City have lost 7 Premier League games in a row at the King Power Stadium with the added embarrassment of failing to score in any of those losses.
A full squad is available for the manager, but the lack of quality is another matter.
Newcastle United
Eddie Howe admitted the break between matches did little to aid his Newcastle United team, but the battling 2-1 win over Brentford feels important. The long wait for silverware was ended before the March international break and the focus now is to finish in the Champions League places and provide a financial boost that may just see the club hold onto Alexander Isak for another season.
Matching the wins of the Champions League rivals was important for Newcastle United, especially after not being at their absolute best, and they also have a game in hand over those around them. Momentum is key at this stage of the season and Newcastle United have that ahead of this away fixture. The Magpies have a 7-3-5 record away from home in the top flight this season having scored 23 goals and conceded 21 in those matches.
Newcastle United were beaten in the FA Cup Fifth Round by Brighton, but they have followed up with 3 straight wins in all competitions and that includes winning the League Cup Final. They have won 5 of their last 7 away Premier League games and recovered from losing consecutive fixtures on their travels at Manchester City and Liverpool to then beat West Ham United.
Injuries are hurting a small squad and the likes of Kieran Trippier and Alexander Isak were withdrawn with issues on Wednesday. The manager is still fairly confident of their availability and Anthony Gordon may also shake off a knock he suffered when away with England.
Head to Head
Newcastle United recorded a comfortable 4-0 home win over Leicester City in December.
Leicester City have won 5 and lost 4 of their last 9 home games against Newcastle United- their successes were earlier in that run of fixtures and it is Newcastle United who have won 4 of their last 6 at the King Power Stadium.
Prediction
Relegation is not going to be confirmed as soon as it may be for Southampton, but Ruud van Nistelrooy and his players have to know it is an inevitability after results this past week.
Twenty-four points are still on the table for Leicester City so the manager will want to see some fight, but a 12 point gap to safety looks far too big to bridge now.
It is not as if Leicester City are motoring towards the finish- instead they are limping as the losses pile up and the team struggle defensively and cannot score goals.
The recent record at the King Power Stadium is embarrassing in all honesty- losing matches is not going to bring much pride, but 7 straight defeats without scoring a goal is hard to understand. The real problem is that Leicester City have not looked that likely to find a way to goal and they are going to struggle to contain a Newcastle United that have ended the long wait for silverware and who are targeting a return to the Champions League.
Eddie Howe was not overly impressed with the performance, but will have been happy with the character of his players after the 2-1 win over Brentford.
A negative was the injuries picked up by Kieran Trippier and Alexander Isak, although the extra days of preparation time ahead of this trip to the East Midlands should aid in the recovery. Both are hugely important for Newcastle United between now and the end of the season and having both in the lineup, as well as Anthony Gordon, would give Newcastle United far too much for Leicester City to cope with.
It would also means options coming off the bench and The Magpies should be able to score the goals needed to make it 6 wins in 9 away Premier League games played.
Bigger tests will come for Newcastle United in the battle for a top four or five finish in the Premier League, but they cannot overlook Leicester City and a professional performance should bring a good, strong win.
