Liverpool

Losing football matches is never going to feel good, but Liverpool remain firmly in control of the Premier League title and fans may be close to receiving more positive news. After Virgil van Dijk admitted there had been progress towards a contract extension, news broke in the middle of the week that Mo Salah may be closing in on an extension of his own and that can only help an enthusiastic crowd to arrive at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

They were beaten on the banks of the River Thames last Sunday, although that has only seen Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table reduced to 11 points and with another fixture scratched off the list. The Reds have a 12-2-1 record at Anfield in the top flight where they have scored 32 goals and conceded 11.

Liverpool were beaten 3-2 at Fulham and have lost 3 of their last 4 games in all competitions. The exception in that run is a home win over Everton and Liverpool have won the last 5 Premier League games at Anfield.

Alisson is hoping to return for Liverpool, but Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez are set to miss out.

West Ham United

Graham Potter and his West Ham United team threw a massive spanner in the Arsenal title challenge by winning at the Emirates Stadium in February, but the main concern for the manager is helping this squad find some consistency. Last weekend there were some positives to take from the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, although Potter knows a big summer is coming up to take West Ham United forward.

The point on the board leaves West Ham United in 16th place in the Premier League table, although well clear of any relegation battle. The Hammers have a 4-5-6 record away from home in the Premier League where they have scored 15 goals and conceded 22.

West Ham United have failed to win any of their last 4 Premier League games, although they have picked up a couple of draws in that time against Everton and Bournemouth. The win at the Emirates Stadium is the only one West Ham United have had in 7 away fixtures in all competitions, although Graham Potter may see the positive of being beaten twice in 5 on their travels.

Aaron Cresswell and Crysencio Summerville are both expected to miss out.

Head to Head

Liverpool and West Ham United have played twice this season and the Premier League leaders have scored five in both victories.

One was at Anfield in the League Cup (5-1) and the other in the Premier League at the London Stadium (0-5).

Liverpool have won 9 in a row at home against West Ham United and have scored 13 goals in winning the last 3.

Prediction

Things might have felt slightly more tense if Arsenal had won at Goodison Park last week and Liverpool then lost at Craven Cottage, but with seven games left, the 11 point lead at the top of the standings looks very big.

It might be less than that at the time this game kicks off, but Liverpool have to focus on their own result with the destiny still in their own control.

News that Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah may be closing on contract extensions can only give the fans a boost at Anfield and that should help the team. There is no doubt that Liverpool have looked a little flat in recent games, but they should still have enough in the final third to believe they can win this game and take another big step towards the title.

Liverpool may benefit from the fact they are playing a West Ham United team they have thumped twice already this season.

In recent seasons at Anfield, Liverpool have scored goals for fun against The Hammers and Graham Potter's team are still a work in progress.

West Ham United have been competitive at least, but the team are still perhaps lacking the right firepower and it may be tough for them to contain Liverpool in this fixture. Recent results are encouraging for those travelling to the North West with West Ham United on Sunday, but this has proven to be a tough match up for them and Graham Potter's style may just leave the visitors a little too open.

It is unlikely to be the most convincing of performances with Liverpool looking a little leggy, but they have had plenty of time to prepare for this one and another win by at least two goals against this West Ham United team can be produced.
