Leicester City
The losses have been piling up over the last three months and that has made relegation feel like a foregone conclusion for Leicester City fans. There is a frustration at the poor recruitment that never gave the squad a real chance of avoiding the drop, but there are also questions about the coaching with the team struggling to score goals, never mind pick up points.
Last weekend they did manage to break a long run without a goal by scoring twice at the Amex Stadium, although the point gained has left Leicester City in 19th place in the Premier League table and 17 points from safety. The Foxes could be relegated before kicking a ball this weekend if West Ham United beat Southampton and Wolves win at Old Trafford in the early Sunday kickoff, while failure to win would guarantee Leicester City's drop regardless of other results. They have a 2-3-11 record at the King Power Stadium where Leicester City have scored 11 goals and conceded 33.
Leicester City had lost 9 in a row in all competitions before the 2-2 draw with Brighton last Saturday- they had failed to score a Premier League goal since the end of January. Ruud van Nistelrooy's men will take aim at snapping another poor record this weekend as Leicester City have lost 8 Premier League games in a row at the King Power Stadium and all without scoring once.
Harry Winks is not being considered for selection for internal reasons, but Facundo Buonanette is available having been ineligible to play against his parent club last weekend. The likes of Victor Kristiansen, Wout Faes and Jeremy Monga are hoping to be passed fit.
Liverpool
Positive news was revealed by Liverpool in the lead up to their last Premier League game when announced that Mo Salah has extended his contract with the club. The hope for the club is that Virgil van Dijk will soon be saying the same and it was the Dutchman who scored a late winner to push Liverpool that much closer to securing the Premier League title.
In recent weeks Liverpool have not been at their best, but they have continued to find the results needed in the Premier League while rivals Arsenal have faltered. The 13 point lead means Liverpool could potentially win the Premier League this weekend if Arsenal have lost at Portman Road and The Reds win here. Arne Slot will only be thinking about improving the Liverpool away record from the 10-5-1 mark they have set in the top flight so far this campaign.
Liverpool have had an edgy month with narrow home wins over Everton and West Ham United, but defeats to Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle United and Fulham surrounding those victories. The loss at Craven Cottage is the first away defeat suffered by Liverpool this season, but also means they have won 1 of their last 4 away Premier League fixtures.
Darwin Nunez is hoping to be in the match day squad, but Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold may have to wait a little longer.
Head to Head
Leicester City scored first on Boxing Day at Anfield, although they conceded on the stroke of half time and were well beaten 3-1 by the end of that fixture.
Leicester City had beaten Liverpool twice in a row at the King Power Stadium, but that run was ended emphatically in a 0-3 defeat in May 2023.
Prediction
Some may feel that Liverpool are almost falling over the line as Premier League Champions with recent performances not quite up to the level they were producing earlier in the season.
However, the pressure has never really been on with Arsenal failing to win enough Premier League fixtures and Liverpool are going to win the title with a comfortable margin to boot.
Last weekend they needed a late goal to beat West Ham United, but there is no doubting that Liverpool were a little fortunate. They have struggled to produce the intensity that was seen earlier in the season and Mo Salah has not quite been at the same level with goals drying up.
With all that said, Liverpool might have found the perfect tonic to restore themselves when facing a Leicester City team that have struggled at both ends of the pitch.
Ruud van Nistelrooy's tenure as not lifted the club as hoped and the 2-2 draw at Brighton last weekend has just produced a stay of execution with relegation an inevitability. That could be confirmed as soon as this weekend, but the goals scored at the Amex Stadium will at least have given the team something of a lift.
Prior to that, Leicester City had not scored in the top flight since the end of January, while the home form has really been embarrassing. The Foxes have not only suffered 8 League defeats in a row here, but they have not scored once in that run and simply avoiding another blank in the final third may be seen as a victory.
Liverpool have been conceding plenty of away goals in recent Premier League matches and so there may be some encouragement for Leicester City.
However, there could also be a potential flatness around the club if relegation has been confirmed at kick off and the likelihood is that Liverpool will be too good on the day. With a week of training behind them, Arne Slot's team can largely contain the Leicester City threat and there is still enough coming from Liverpool in the final third to believe they win this game and take that big step towards the Championship.
Odds against quotes for a win to nil looks a bit more appealing than backing Liverpool to win by two or more goals at much shorter odds. Both could potentially return to the winning enclosure, but the pricing does mean the Liverpool win with a clean sheet option feels best.
