Preview
Credit has to be given to Denmark U21 for not only Qualifying for the Quarter Final at the 2025 Under 21 European Championships, but for topping the Group with a game to spare. The team have showed their character in fighting back to beat Ukraine U21 and Netherlands U21 having trailed to each of those opponents and that secures Denmark a place in Presov on Sunday.
Having that extra day of preparation time is ideal for a squad that is likely going to be employed in the last of the Group matches.
Momentum can be important in what is a relatively short international tournament compared to the majority that take place at senior level and Denmark would like to enter the Quarter Final with another win under their belt. By the time they kick off on Wednesday, the Quarter Final match up will be known and so there is a case for Denmark to make some changes, but not so many to not still be favourites to win this last Group fixture.
They take on Finland U21 who were beaten 0-2 by Ukraine last time out and are bottom of the Group with a single point on the board.
However, that point does mean Finland still have an opportunity to progress, although they are likely going to need a big win and hope the Netherlands are only able to secure a narrow victory over Ukraine in the other fixture being played at the same time.
To say progress is a long shot is perhaps downplaying the tough task in front of Finland, but all they can really control is making sure they win this game. That would need a defensive improvement from the opening two matches after Finland allowed both Netherlands and Ukraine to score twice and create some quality chances against them.
Finland will take some encouragement from the poor defensive numbers that have been produced by Denmark, but containing the attacking threat may ultimately prove to be too much for the underdog to handle.
As they chase the game, Finland could leave themselves open at the back and Denmark do look capable of exploiting spaces, even if they do make wholesale changes to the first eleven.
These nations met in the 2021 Under 21 Euro Qualifiers and Denmark won both fixtures, which in turn makes it 4 wins in a row against Finland at this level.
Prediction
With Qualification for the Quarter Final confirmed and the likely changes that will be made to the starting lineup, Denmark U21 are not as strong favourites as they would have been in this fixture.
Two solid wins have been produced and the attacking firepower makes Denmark dangerous though and they could still have enough to get the better of Finland U21.
The latter 'need' to win and hope results go their way if they are going to join Denmark in the Quarter Final, but Finland have struggled defensively at the tournament. That has to be a concern when facing a Denmark team that have scored five goals in the opening two fixtures and who have until Sunday before they are due to play again.
It may influence the manager to select a stronger Danish team than some anticipate and they can exploit the Finnish vulnerabilities at the back.
