A Sports Betting Preview by Auls

Suriname v Mexico
Football: CONCACAF Gold Cup Group A
Wednesday 18th June 2025 - Kick Off 10pm (EST)
3am (British Time)

Preview

A fourth appearance at the Gold Cup has to be celebrated, but the real success that Suriname are enjoying is in the World Cup Qualifiers.

They have found a way to earn a spot in the last of the Qualifying Groups alongside Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala and that will soon be the sole focus for the team. After losing 4-3 to a very late goal against Costa Rica, Suriname are already in a difficult position when it comes to Qualifying for the Quarter Final at the Gold Cup, especially as they now face the nation that most expect to lead the way in the section.

Attendances have been pretty poor in North America this month, but that was not the case for Mexico, even if there had been some political murmurings about what may happen on the day. These off field issues continue to divide those in the United States, but Mexican fans will always come out in huge numbers to support their national team and that was the case in the 3-2 win over Dominican Republic.

Overall the performance was decent enough, but Mexico want to show improvement in the second game in the Group. They did win the Confederation's last Nations League, which suggests Mexico are in the best position of the co-hosts one year from the World Cup Finals, but backing that up with another success in the Gold Cup feels important.

This is the last competitive action Mexico will have before playing at home in the World Cup Finals next June and the team will want to show a bit more defensive quality to ensure this fixture is not nearly as tense as the first.

They will also have respect for the fact that Suriname have played well in the World Cup Qualifiers, as well as reaching the Nations League Quarter Final before going down to Canada. Further respect has to be given to a team that had been 2-0 down very early on against Costa Rica, but who had been leading 2-3 with less than 15 minutes remaining before the heartbreaking defeat.

It will be a challenge for the players to pick themselves up from that defeat and against a Mexico team that beat them twice in the 2022/23 Nations League when the nations last met.

Prediction

After watching what Costa Rica were able to do against Suriname in the opening Group fixture, Mexico should be able to come through this second fixture with relative comfort.

All credit has to be given to Suriname for the performances both in the Nations League and World Cup Qualifiers, but they have found it tough when coming up against the absolute best in the Confederation. Canada beat them in both Legs of the Nations League Quarter Final in this latest edition, while Mexico beat them twice in the one before and Suriname's focus may already have turned to later in the year when they are in more World Cup Qualifying action.

They did push hard against Costa Rica and created quality chances of their own, but the defensive issues could be exploited by a Mexico team that are getting loud support.

Mexico allowed Dominican Republic to get back into the opening Group game twice, but a bit more focus is likely to be employed in this one and they can secure a win that could take them through to the Quarter Final.
