Preview
Those who will look back at the 2025 season and create a list of most disappointing teams will likely have the Atlanta Braves (45-60) pretty high at the top. This was a team expected to challenge for the National League East title and also become a threat to win the World Series, but instead the season cannot end quickly enough for a Braves team fifteen games under 0.500.
They won the opener of this inter-League series though and the Atlanta Braves have dominated the Kansas City Royals (52-55) in recent times. The hosts are another team that feel like they are underachieving and it will be interesting to see what decisions upper management make ahead of the trade deadline in a couple of days time.
Kansas City will be looking to win the remaining two games of the series and just push back towards the Wild Card spots in the American League and they will give the ball to Seth Lugo for this second game. The pitcher has a 7-5 record and 2.95 ERA in nineteen starts this season and he has just signed a two year extension with the Royals having had the name come up in trade rumours.
This should allow Seth Lugo to concentrate fully on the task at hand and the veteran has been in solid form since the beginning on June. In that time Lugo has made nine starts for the Royals and he has a 4-0 record with a 2.38 ERA, while also bouncing back from a rough outing just before the All Star break.
Seth Lugo allowed five runs in that start against the Miami Marlins, but last time out he held the Chicago Cubs to two runs through 6 Innings thrown.
Last season he threw 2 scoreless Innings against the Atlanta Braves, but will be facing them for the first time this season.
The Braves will hand the ball to Erick Fedde in the second game of this series, but the veteran will be bringing in a 3-10 record and 5.22 ERA from the twenty starts he has made this season. All of those have been with the St Louis Cardinals, but Atlanta needed to bring in starting pitching having seen another of the Opening Day rotation go down with an injury, which has been a real factor in their overall season record.
Erick Fedde will be hoping a change of uniform also means a change in fortune having put together a 0-4 record and an awful 13.25 ERA in his last five starts for the Cardinals. He has managed to get through 9 Innings in his three starts this month and Fedde has allowed sixteen runs in his last three road starts.
In two starts against the Kansas City Royals last season, which covered over 10 Innings, Erick Fedde did only allow a single run when pitching with the Chicago White Sox.
Prediction
There looks to be a clear edge on the mound in favour of the home team, although the Kansas City Royals do need a bit more from the batting lineup to really make a push for the post-season over the next two months.
Seth Lugo has been pitching well enough to at least offer some resistance to the Atlanta bats that put up ten runs on Monday and the Royals should be able to attack a pitcher in Erick Fedde who has been out of sorts of late.
