Football: English Premier League
Saturday 30th August 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
Sunderland
The fans will always be most disappointed when they see their club dumped out of any Cup competition, but for Sunderland's board and management, it is clear that consolidation in the Premier League is the only 'prize' they are interested in at the end of this season. Going out of the League Cup on Penalties to League One Huddersfield Town will be a frustration and may mean the fringe players do not have as many opportunities as they could have done moving forward.
A number of first team players will be available this weekend and Sunderland are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Turf Moor in the Premier League. Importantly, The Black Cats did earn the three points in their opening home match of the League season against West Ham United and this feels like another significant test for a club that has been tipped up for an immediate relegation back into the Championship.
Sunderland were dumped out of the League Cup at the Stadium of Light and it does mean they have won 1 of their last 6 matches in front of the home supporters in all competitions. The only positive for Regis Le Bris is that his team are unbeaten in normal time in both matches played here this season having ended the last campaign with 4 straight home defeats.
Dan Ballard picked up a knock last weekend, but is hopeful of being available after the international break. There are a number of other squad members in a similar position, while the players that were rested in the League Cup tie are set to be recalled.
Brentford
All three newly promoted clubs will have been keen to earn Premier League points very quickly, but there were one or two established clubs that will have been thinking the same. With that in mind, it has been a big week for Brentford and the inexperienced Head Coach, Keith Andrews, and the entire fanbase will be feeling much more comfortable if they can enter the September international break behind another strong result.
The win at Bournemouth in the League Cup Second Round is a solid result for Brentford, but it is the 1-0 home win over Aston Villa in the Premier League last weekend that would have really felt good. There will be some hope that Brentford can just bring in some more reinforcements in the remaining days of the transfer window, while the team will be looking for a stronger away performance than on the opening weekend.
Brentford were battered at Nottingham Forest in that fixture, but wins over Aston Villa and Bournemouth with clean sheets will certainly have raised the confidence levels around the club. The result at the Vitality Stadium means Brentford have lost 1 of their last 6 away games in all competitions going back to last season.
Yoane Wissa is still hoping for a move away and has yet to be involved, but Thiago has made up for the absence with two goals and an assist in three games. Keith Andrews made some changes to the starting eleven for the League Cup win at Bournemouth and so there are likely to be more for this fixture with regular names returning.
Head to Head
Brentford picked up four points against Sunderland in the 2017/18 season when both were playing in the Championship.
Three of those points were from a 0-2 win at the Stadium of Light in February 2018.
Sunderland have lost the last 2 games when hosting Brentford, although the one prior to February 2018 was in the early 1990s when The Black Cats were still playing at Roker Park.
Prediction
If the early Premier League results are anything to read into, home form is going to be very important to all of the clubs bidding to avoid relegation.
That has always been the case, but in recent years some of the newly promoted clubs have struggled for much success even when hosting matches.
However, this season Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland have not only all won home League games, but have done so with clean sheets.
Sunderland will be hosting again this weekend ahead of the September international break and it is an important game against a Brentford team that have been tipped to go through difficulties in this campaign. Importantly for Keith Andrews and the club, Brentford also earned a home win with a clean sheet last weekend and they backed that up with an impressive win at Bournemouth in the League Cup during the week.
This should mean a confident Brentford team make the long trip to to the North East, although there is still room for improvement. The underlying numbers suggest Brentford can still pose a threat going forward, even without Bryan Mbeumo and, currently, Yoane Wissa, but defensive improvements will be needed.
That may not show up in this fixture, even though Sunderland scored three goals in their home opener.
It was not a dominant attacking display and Sunderland were not exactly firing in the final third in their defeat at Burnley, but the signings made have toughened up this starting eleven. Sunderland have impressed with the early defensive structures and that will give them every chance of avoiding a defeat.
The reality is that the layers are struggling to split these teams this early in the season and the case can be made for all three results.
Instead it may pay off to back this fixture featuring less than three goals shared out.
Brentford have earned back to back clean sheets and have looked much better defensively since the first half at the City Ground earlier in the month. At the same time, Sunderland's defensive numbers have been pretty decent in the first two games and only a goal deep into injury time has prevented all 3 of their opening fixtures finishing with two goals scored on the day.
An early goal could change the game state very quickly, but neither manager will want to give too much away and it could develop into a battle in the North East. The money seems to be coming in for the 'under' in the goals market with the price dipping since the start of the week, but that may be the best play considering it covers 1-0, 2-0 wins either way and the low-scoring draw.
