Newcastle United v Wolves
Football: English Premier League
Saturday 13th September 2025 - Kick Off 3pm

Newcastle United

The long Alexander Isak saga came to what felt an inevitable conclusion when the Swedish striker was sold for a British record fee to Champions Liverpool. Eddie Howe is probably glad that the distraction is now behind his squad, even of the reinvestment of the funds has perhaps been underwhelming, and the season starts now for Newcastle United and all associated with the club.

Despite only having 2 points on the board and sitting in 17th place in the Premier League table, St James' Park should be excited about the coming months with Premier League and Champions League Football being played. The Magpies were so unfortunate in losing the first Premier League game played here, but they will be looking to bounce back on Saturday before the big clash with Barcelona to open the Champions League Group play.

Newcastle United will be hoping the two new attacking signings can help get things going after playing out a second goalless draw in August at Elland Road. They have not won any of their last 5 Premier League games, which is a worry, but Newcastle United had won 6 straight home League fixtures before losses to Everton and Liverpool either side of the summer break.

Anthony Gordon will continue to serve a ban, but Joelinton and Jacob Ramsey could both be available on Saturday. Yoane Wissa is likely to get the nod ahead of youngster Nick Woltemade to lead the line after both arrived ahead of the close of the transfer window.

Wolves

The last couple of years have seen Wolves survive partly on their own quality, but with a lot of helping hand from how poor the newly promoted clubs have been in competing in the Premier League. Vitor Pereira will be hoping the summer arrivals can bed in pretty quickly to get Wolves going after a poor start has been made that much worse by the early results achieved by Leeds United, Burnley and Sunderland.

After West Ham United's win at Nottingham Forest, Wolves are now the only team with the 'perfect' imperfect record having lost all 3 Premier League fixtures played to prop up the rest of the Division. They have progressed in the League Cup, but the manager and the players need to get going in the top flight, which remains the ultimate priority for the club.

Wolves did earn that League Cup win by coming from behind to beat Premier League West Ham United, but the 2-3 defeat to Everton last time out will have really stung. Since beating Leicester City at the end of April in a 6 game winning run in the Premier League, Wolves have picked up a single point in 7 top flight fixtures.

Ki-Jana Hoever and Jorgen Strand Larsen are hoping to shake off injuries to return to the squad- the latter had been the Newcastle United target and Wolves turned down three bids for the Norwegian striker. Hugo Bueno is another hoping to travel to the North East with the squad.

Head to Head

Newcastle United did the League double over Wolves last season.

They have beaten Wolves 4 times in a row at St James' Park and Newcastle United have earned back to back 3-0 victories over them.

Prediction

Two weeks ago, we predicted that Newcastle United may have been a little flat when visiting Leeds United just days after putting in so much in an eventual losing effort against Liverpool.

Suffice to say that was the case in what was a poor quality match as Eddie Howe's men played out another goalless draw.

Alexander Isak was continuing to cause an off-field distraction when that match was played, but he has got his move to Liverpool and Newcastle United have signed Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade to replace him and Callum Wilson.

They have clearly been lacking that Number 9 in the first three games, but Newcastle United should be all the better with things settled down.

Now they need to get back to winning ways.

The visit of Wolves feels ideal considering Newcastle United have beaten them 4 times in a row in the North East, including consecutive 3-0 wins.

It also helps that Wolves are the only Premier League club without a point and still bedding in some new arrivals having lost talisman Matheus Cunha to Manchester United. Jorgen Strand Larsen was also missing in the 2-3 home loss to Everton, but the striker is expected to be available to play in a Stadium in which he may have been hoping to be performing in a black and white shirt rather than old gold.

Perhaps he will be inspired to show Newcastle United what they had been bidding for before settling on a young player from the Bundesliga and Yoane Wissa, but it will be tough for Jorgen Strand Larsen to do that.

Despite the struggles in the final third, Newcastle United have looked pretty solid defensively and even the attacking powers of Liverpool were struggling before the home team were reduced to ten men.

Two clean sheets have already been achieved and it feels like Newcastle United will be able to largely contain what Wolves bring to the door.

Anthony Gordon remains out through suspension, but Newcastle United should be more settled and Wissa's Premier League experience is a real help. There are players around him that can help the former Brentford striker and Nick Woltemade can also make an impact, which should all lead to what could be another relatively comfortable success for The Magpies when hosting Wolves at St James' Park.
