They took two of three games against rivals Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park this past weekend, but a three game winning run was ended in a Sunday night defeat. Not only has the momentum been stifled, but the New York Yankees (83-66) are now 4 games behind American League East leading Toronto Blue Jays and games are running out to move past them.

Despite that, the New York Yankees are on course to finish with the best record of the Wild Card teams and that would at least mean hosting that opening Round Series in the post-season. The team and manager Aaron Boone are not giving up on chasing down the Blue Jays, but they are also focused to finish with the top spot in the Wild Card Race and that means looking to extend the 1.5 game lead over the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees will be confident in getting the better of this series with the Minnesota Twins (65-84) who are eliminated from post-season consideration and who have dropped four of the last five games.

In recent history, New York have dominated the Twins and they had won nine in a row against them before dropping the most recent game.

New York will give the ball to Carlos Rodon and look for the starter to set the table to get back to winning ways over Minnesota. The pitcher has a 16-8 record and 3.11 ERA in thirty starts made in 2025 and one more decision win is needed to set a new career best record for a single season having matched the sixteen decision wins earned last season.

Carlos Rodon has shown little sign of slowing down and he has a 5-1 record with a 2.38 ERA in his last seven starts for the Yankees. The decision loss was given to him last time out, despite only allowing two runs to the Detroit Tigers, and that performance should not have dented the confidence that Rodon is taking to the mound.

The Twins will counter with Simeon Woods Richardson who has a 6-4 record and 4.58 ERA in twenty appearances for the team in 2025. Nineteen of those have been in starts and Woods Richardson has already earned more decision wins this season than he had in 2024.

Simeon Woods Richardson missed a month of action from the end of July to the end of August, but he is making his fourth start in a row since then. He has a 1-0 record, despite a 6.59 ERA, and he has allowed five earned runs in 10 Innings thrown in September.

Monday will be Simeon Woods Richardson's first career appearance against the New York Yankees.

Prediction

The disappointment of losing the last of a three game set at Fenway Park has to be put aside by the New York Yankees and they will be looking to get back to winning ways against an opponent they have tended to dominate.

Recent Minnesota Twins performances makes it tough to believe they can put a winning run together against the New York Yankees.

After losing nine in a row, the Twins did win the most recent game against New York, but the Yankees look to have a considerable edge on the mound.

Aaron Judge is playing at a high level right now and the rest of the batting lineup will take confidence from that.

This should see them back up Carlos Rodon and ultimately record a relatively strong victory to open this series.
