Canterbury Bulldogs
Canterbury playing at Accor provides them a chance to summon their best under pressure and boy will they need it after a very good season which has started to quickly unravel with injuries in the last 6 weeks.
The Bulldogs have shown they can dominate possession, complete sets, and force defensive fatigue through sustained forward work, but doing that against a finals heavyweight will not be an easy task. When under pressure, Canterbury have lacked composure, penalties or misreads in defence can lead to big field position losses — something Penrith may exploit.
Injury concern - Crichton’s status is unsettled and I believe the injury is far too great for him to take the field, and other regular starters are under fitness clouds too, further reducing their margin for error.
Team News – Crichton may play but I expect not, Burton moves to the centres to cover him and Sexton will partner Galvin in the halves, Bronson Xerri also returns with Montoya on the extended bench as he also eyes a return from injury.
Penrith Panthers
Penrith are seasoned veterans in the finals and they know how to win when everything is on the line; that mental toughness counts. Nathan Cleary’s form with the boot and in general play and a forward pack that can enforce the middle, they really do have that star power and experience in these big matches that will make the Panthers very hard to beat.
Penrith have depth and experience even when missing some squad members, this squad has shown it can cover, adapt, and deliver under duress. However, its no secret the mountain men are chasing five straight premierships, this can create a target on their back; these expectations can turn into a burden.
Earlier in the season and even in recent games, Penrith have given up points in their own half and off second-phase plays. Those could bite them against a Bulldogs side willing to grind and possibly muster plenty of offloads making it difficult to defend against.
Team News – the same 17 has been named this week.
Odds
Storm start favourites due to their amazing home record, $3.60 to $1.30, the line 10.5 points and total points is 39.5
The Betting Verdict
Coming into this Finals Week 2 showdown at Accor Stadium, the Bulldogs are hanging by a thread and desperate. They earned that sudden-death berth but have stumbled in recent weeks, their resolve being tested both by form and injury.
Across the park, Penrith, the defending premiers, are building. Having already negotiated elimination matches and overcome adversity, they carry both confidence and a historical weight of expectation — that of extending a dynasty.
For Canterbury, this is an opportunity to validate a season that’s seen them fly high but now come into the finals under pressure. They’ve had moments of brilliance: strong starts, territorial dominance, and the kind of grit that earns praise. But the last few matches have shown cracks — they’ve dropped four of their past five, and every mistake seems magnified in finals footy.
With key players fitness in question, especially captain Stephen Crichton, and the challenge of depth under finals intensity, the Bulldogs must draw on character more than momentum.
Penrith, by contrast, are battle-hardened. Last weekends win over the Warriors re-ignited belief, especially as several Origin stars returned. Nathan Cleary continues to be central — his kicking game, game management, and ability to find footholds when defences compress make him deadly in tight matches.
The Panthers forwards bring punch, their edges offer strike, and their finals experience is vast. Even with a lower ladder finish, they are arguably peaking at the right moment - dangerous, determined, and with something to prove.
Penrith are well ahead in the battle of these teams, 48 played 19-1-28 and the venue stats are pretty even, Canterbury win at home 54% while the Panthers are 25-23 at Accor Stadium where an 80,000 strong crowd is expected, most wearing Blue and White.
The match will probably begin with Bulldogs attempting to establish control — forward carries, aggressive defence, pinning Panthers deep with repeat sets. Penrith, meanwhile, will seek to neutralize that through disciplined structure, quick ruck speed, and Cleary pinning Bulldogs with his kicking game to push them back.
As fatigue sets in, the game is likely to open up on the edges. Penrith’s outside backs and threat off passes or broken play may find the space. Bulldogs will try to slow it, squeeze it up in the middle, frustrate Penrith and make them work for every metre.
As much as I would like the someone other than Penrith to win it this season, I expect Penrith to edge this one. Their ability to manage pressure, their experience in finals, and their capacity to stay disciplined when the stakes are high give them a narrow edge.
