Aston Villa
Any win was always going to be welcomed by Unai Emery and the Aston Villa fans, but that does not mean there was no signs of frustration during the 1-0 victory over Bologna in the Europa League on Thursday. Key players are continuing to operate with some flatness, while Ollie Watkins missed a Penalty to continue a run of poor form that is now pushing months, rather than weeks.
Ultimately the hope for the manager is that the win will have jump-started the season for Aston Villa who are 18th in the Premier League table and with 3 points on the board. They have yet to win a League game and Aston Villa have continued to struggle in the final third, while putting together a 0-1-1 record at Villa Park in the top flight.
Aston Villa are unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions in normal time, but they have not scored more than a single goal within a game since mid-May. The Villans have drawn with Newcastle United and been beaten by Crystal Palace here in the Premier League, but that opening Europa League victory was also in a fixture played at Villa Park.
Emi Martinez missed the game on Thursday and is considered a doubt for this one too. The likes of Amadou Onana, Ross Barkley and Youri Tielemens are set to miss out, while Unai Emery is tinkering with his starting eleven to see if he can find a spark to get this season going.
Fulham
Marco Silva has to be very pleased with the way his Fulham team have been performing since the September international break and the 1-0 victory over Cambridge United has taken them through to the League Cup Fourth Round. Home victories in the Premier League has just pushed Fulham up the standings, and there will be a real confidence within the squad ahead of this next League outing.
After some inconsistent results in August, September has seen Fulham move back up to 8th in the Premier League table with 8 points from a possible 15 secured. The majority of those have been earned at Craven Cottage and Fulham will travel to the Midlands with a 0-1-1 away record having scored a single goal and conceded 3 in those matches.
Fulham have suffered a single defeat this season in all competitions, but they did only have 2 points from the opening three Premier League games. The side have won 4 of their last 5 games in all competitions, including the last 3 in a row, but again it should be mentioned that all of those victories have been at Craven Cottage. Fulham have won 1 of their last 4 away Premier League games and been beaten twice in that run.
New signing Kevin is a doubt for this fixture, although he is not expected to be a long-term absentee even if he misses out on Sunday.
Head to Head
Aston Villa did the Premier League double over Fulham last season, including beating them 1-0 at home.
That victory in May means Aston Villa have beaten Fulham 6 times in a row at Villa Park.
Prediction
Recent history gives Aston Villa the edge in this fixture and those who follow the trends may be appealed by the odds against quote for a seventh straight home victory over Fulham.
However, there is very little to like about the recent Aston Villa performances and no one who has watched them play will dismiss the clear loss of confidence within the team.
Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins are perhaps garnering the most attention with the England international players well below the standards they have set, but the entire team was criticised for being 'lazy' last weekend.
Beating Bologna has to help, but Aston Villa were looking nervous at the end and they are still struggling in the final third.
Next up is a Fulham team that have been in good form, but who have taken advantage of a schedule offering up plenty of home games. Marco Silva's men have won 3 in a row since the September international break, but those have been home games against Leeds United, Brentford and Cambridge United and this is a much tougher test, at least on paper.
Fulham have shown plenty of early resilience though and especially since the opening couple of games of the season.
They will likely want to make things as difficult as possible for Aston Ville early on and try and get the fans nervousness to filter onto to the pitch. There is pace and quality in the Fulham attack that will cause problems, but they have yet to show the same intent away from home as they have at Craven Cottage and there is still some inconsistency in the attacking performances.
2 of the last 3 games hosted by Aston Villa against Fulham have ended 1-0 and this feels like another low-scoring game in the making.
Both teams have played 7 games in all competitions this season and both have seen 6 of those end with less than three goals shared out.
The recent seasons in the Premier League have seen goals flying in, but the early fixtures this time around have featured plenty of lower-scoring games. Early goals do change the game state, but both Aston Villa and Fulham have had some issues in the final third and the defences may end up coming out of top in this early Sunday fixture.
