Newcastle United
There are a number of fans who admit it will take some time to 'adjust' from the sale of Alexander Isak, but Newcastle United are perhaps avoiding making headlines that other clubs would be if they had made a similarly poor start to the season. The goalless draw at Bournemouth last weekend was yet another difficult watch for Newcastle United fans making the long journey down to the South Coast and Eddie Howe will need a big reaction from his players.
The Magpies are the defending League Cup holders and they have made it through to the Fourth Round of the competition following a comfortable home win over League One Bradford City. However, bigger games are coming up before the next international break and Newcastle United are 13th in the Premier League table with 6 points earned. They are back at home this weekend where they have a 1-0-1 record in the top flight with 3 goals scored and conceded.
Newcastle United have played 7 games in all competitions this season and the wins have been against lower League Bradford City and the only team in the Premier League without a point, Wolves. Both of those victories have been at home, but Newcastle United have also lost fixtures against Liverpool and Barcelona here this season.
Anthony Gordon is back from a suspension and that is a huge boost for the home team. Both Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa will be hoping to return after the next international break, while Fabian Schar may need a few more days of recovery as he pushes through the concussion suffered.
Arsenal
There has been some real surprise shown by Mikel Arteta that he was criticised as much as he was after Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Manchester City. From a personal point of view, it does sound like Arteta has deluded himself by mistaking possession for 'domination' in that fixture last Sunday and it was clear before kick off that the manager had taken a very cautious approach to a home fixture against a struggling rival.
Progress has been made in the League Cup, but only winning one of the big two competitions will really make fans believe that Mikel Arteta can carry Arsenal further forward. The dropped points last Sunday means Arsenal are 2nd in the Premier League table and already 5 points behind Champions Liverpool, which puts pressure on a team that have a 1-0-1 away record in the top flight this season.
Arsenal won 0-2 at Vale Park on Wednesday in the League Cup, but it was a somewhat stodgy performance in the second half and the fans will know they need to be a lot better to win this big Premier League game. The Gunners are unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions since the defeat at Anfield and they have won 3 of those fixtures.
Martin Odegaard is hoping to travel with the squad, but Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are set to miss some significant time.
Head to Head
Both Arsenal and Newcastle United beat the other at home by the same 1-0 scoreline in the Premier League last season.
It was Newcastle United who won both League Cup Semi Final ties and in 2-0 victories.
Newcastle United have won 3 home games in a row against Arsenal and all without conceding a goal.
Prediction
The second live game from the Premier League on Sunday comes from St James' Park and it feels a big one for both Newcastle United and Arsenal ahead of the second round of Champions League fixtures.
Eddie Howe will know that the pressure could start to build if form is not improved and that despite the successes he has had as Newcastle United manager. However, his team have struggled for consistency early in this campaign and the squad is stretched by having European commitments back on the schedule.
A single League win is not the kind of return expected and Newcastle United have really missed Alexander Isak's presence up front.
Anthony Gordon being suspended has not helped, but the relatively toothless attacking displays have to be a concern. Last weekend Newcastle United barely created anything in the goalless draw at Bournemouth, although Eddie Howe may be much more pleased with some of the defensive performances through the first couple of months of the season.
Being at home will help, even though Liverpool and Barcelona have won here this season.
However, it has been a struggle for Arsenal when making the long trip to the North East and they have lost their last 3 games at St James' Park without scoring a goal. The Gunners were also beaten 3 times by Newcastle United in the 2024/25 season and this is a huge test for the players and perhaps even more so for a manager who has had to absorb plenty of criticism this past week.
The 1-1 home draw with Manchester City might have been acceptable two years ago, but Pep Guardiola's team are not in the best of form and they looked vulnerable.
Instead of trying to make a statement, Mikel Arteta put out what can only be described as a cautious team with the qualities of Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Martinelli left on the bench in favour of Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard.
With Bukayo Saka not match fit for a start and with Martin Odegaard ruled out, Mikel Arteta cannot be as surprised as he claimed that pundits and supporters would be frustrated by the team selection. Once the half time changes were made, Arsenal were much better, but were playing catch up and ultimately has cost them two more points.
Now he will have to make big decisions about the kind of team he will select at a ground where Arsenal have struggled and where goals may be hard to come by.
Defensively there has not been much wrong with Arsenal, but they have been creating next to nothing from open play and that is a major concern.
Everything points to this being yet another late Sunday afternoon Premier League offering that may not feature a lot of goals and that is something we have become used to when these two clubs have been playing. Arsenal have had low scoring games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City already in this spot, while Newcastle United have scored 1 goal in their last 3 Premier League fixtures.
Eddie Howe's men have tended to be much more proactive and dangerous at home, but he will not want to leave too many spaces and another low-scoring, competitive game between Arsenal and Newcastle United is expected.
10 of the last 11 games between Arsenal and Newcastle United have ended with less than three goals shared out, including all 4 played last season.
The run at St James' Park has reached 7 games since there were at least three goals shared out and the under 2.5 goals option looks a solid play.
It is a bigger price backing at least one of these teams to fail to find the back of the net and that has been the outcome in 15 of the last 16 games between these Premier League clubs. That market would also have been successful in the last 7 between the clubs at St James' Park and that looks the angle to take, even if it rules out the 1-1 score being on our side.
Backing at least one team to fail to score would have returned a winner in 6 of the 7 Arsenal games played this season with only the injury time equaliser last Sunday preventing it from being a winner every time.
This market would also have won in 4 of the 7 Newcastle United games played and that would have been better if Anthony Gordon had not scored a consolation in injury time against Barcelona in the first Champions League played.
An early goal changes everything, but both defences may feel they can contain much of what the attacks are bringing to the field and it may take a solitary strike to decide a winner on the day.
