Chelsea
Enzo Maresca will have chosen to make some rotations to his first eleven for the Champions League tie during the week, but the Chelsea manager needed a positive performance and he largely got to witness that. It is not a victory that will live long in the memory, but Chelsea's squad will have been given a confidence boost after some recent setbacks and gives them a little momentum ahead of a big Premier League game.
Being reduced to ten men in consecutive Premier League games has clearly not been a positive for Chelsea and they are now 8th in the standings and some will feel the 8 points on the board is below par. They will be hosting the Champions at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea have a 1-1-1 record in the Premier League with 3 goals scored and conceded.
Chelsea had lost 3 of 4 games in all competitions with the exception being a Cup win over a lower League Club, but the win over Benfica will do them good. The Blues will be looking to bounce back from a really disappointing 1-3 home loss to Brighton in the Premier League last weekend.
There is a defensive problem to be solved with Levi Colwill and Tosin out and Trevoh Chalobah suspended, although Wes Fofana could be available. Cole Palmer is the big absentee up in the forward areas, but Joao Pedro is available despite his sending off late in the win in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Liverpool
There have been some worrying signs even when Liverpool opened the season with a number of wins in succession and those concerns have been highlighted in consecutive losses. Defeats at Crystal Palace and Galatasaray are not the worst results in the world, but Liverpool's frailties have been evident all campaign and something will need to change.
Arne Slot will know that his team need to be better, but Liverpool are still top of the Premier League table, although there is a chance that Arsenal will have overtaken them by the time this fixture kicks off. The manager is not going to be worried about other results in October and instead the focus is to find a way to get Liverpool back on track. The Reds have a 2-0-1 away record in the Premier League, but both wins have been secured deep into injury time.
Liverpool had won 7 in a row in all competitions, even if not at their best, but they have lost both away games played over the last seven days. Going back to last season, Liverpool have now lost 4 of their last 6 away games in all competitions.
The result wasn't what Arne Slot would have wanted in Istanbul, but the likelihood is that he has lost first choice goalkeeper Alisson for at least this fixture. Hugo Ekitike is another who picked up a knock and has to be considered a doubt, while Federico Chiesa did not travel as hoped to have a few days of recovery before this League game.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games between these two rivals was won by the home team last season.
Chelsea are unbeaten in 4 at Stamford Bridge against Liverpool, but 3 in a row had ended in draws before the 3-1 win in May.
Prediction
The late kick off in the English top flight on Saturday features two clubs playing in the Champions League who are looking to bounce back from defeats in the Premier League last weekend.
Chelsea were thumped at home by Brighton, although the game turned on yet another sending off, while Liverpool conceded very late to get a taste of their own medicine in a 2-1 defeat at Selhurst Park.
Both teams could be without key players- Chelsea are really short of options in centre back positions and Cole Palmer is set to miss out, while Liverpool are expected to be without Alisson and potentially Hugo Ekitike.
Those absences raise some questions, but it could end up developing into a game that features plenty of attacking threat at both ends of the field.
Liverpool may not have scored in Istanbul, but it has been over twelve months since that happened in the Premier League and they will have openings against this makeshift Chelsea backline. They have not really been very convincing, but there is enough attacking talent to believe Liverpool will find a way to goal at least once.
You have to feel the same about Chelsea with some of the really poor defending that the Champions have shown throughout this season- perhaps Arne Slot goes back to a midfield that helped win the title and with the likes of Conor Bradley and Andrew Robertson in full back areas, but Chelsea should still offer a significant threat and with options from the bench.
In both Premier League games between the teams last season, both teams created plenty of chances and it should be a fixture that features at least three goals shared out for a fourth time in a row.
