Scotland

Almost thirty years have passed since Scotland last reached the World Cup Finals and they are hoping the experiences of playing at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 will give them the momentum to push towards North America next summer. Steve Clarke will be disappointed that Scotland were Relegated from League A of the Nations League earlier this year, but they have made a positive start to the World Cup Qualifying Group.

Last month Scotland were able to pick up 4 points outside of their own borders when earning a draw at Denmark and then beating Belarus on neutral field. That keeps them level with the Danes and a point ahead of Greece, while the players want to make sure they are keeping control of their own destiny by helping Scotland win a couple of fixtures in the space of the next few days.

Scotland are unbeaten in 3 games and they have kept clean sheets in all of those matches, while also winning twice. However, it has been a tough run at Hampden Park where Scotland have won 1 of their last 6 games, and the team have lost twice in a row here while conceding three goals in each defeat.

Greece

They have been Promoted into League A of the Nations League, but it is a surprise that a solid Greece national team have not made it through to any major international tournament since the 2014 World Cup Finals. The expanded European Championships should have offered Greece an opportunity, especially as a former continental Champion, but they have come up short and some early work to do in this section.

The target has to be a top two finish which would mean a Play Off spot at the very least, but Greece were thumped 0-3 at home by Denmark in September. Three points have been earned, but against the weakest team in the section, and Greece could find themselves significantly behind Denmark and Scotland if they cannot earn positive results this week.

Greece had won 4 in a row in all competitions, but that run was ended in that thumping home loss to Denmark last time out. The nation lost an international friendly just before the Euro 2024 Finals to hosts Germany, but Greece have won their last 4 away games.

Head to Head

These two nations met in the Nations League Relegation/Promotion Play Off between League A and League B and it was Greece who came through with a 3-1 aggregate win.

Both Greece and Scotland won one of the two Legs played in March, but it was Greece's 0-3 win here in the Second Leg that secured Promotion to the highest level in the Nations League.

Prediction

When these nations met back in March, Scotland were guilty of some big mistakes and defensive lapses and that proved to be the difference as Greece put a clinical display on the board.

It is a result that will give Greece confidence, and Hampden Park some nerves, but Scotland have to believe they are going to be a lot better.

This time the players have not just played a tough game in Greece days earlier and they will be a bit more aware of what the visiting team can offer. Overall the game was actually competitive until the first goal and there is a huge amount of importance attached to that in this big World Cup Qualifier.

Steve Clarke's team have earned 3 clean sheets in a row, which will be a boost for them, while there are players that can make a difference in the attacking third with the home fans pushing them forward.

Greece have won 4 away games in a row, including a win here, which means they have to be respected.

However, they were well beaten by Denmark at home in the last Qualifier played and it will have dented some of the belief within the squad. If they were to fall behind here, Greece could struggle to stay in the match mentally and it does feel like the edge should be with the hosts.

Plenty of pressure will be attached on the fixture as the two nations not only look to stick with Denmark, but also know that the head to head could be the difference between a Play Off place and not. Scotland have to show what they learned from the defeat in the Nations League, but they did show what they can achieve when fully focused when winning 0-1 in Greece in the First Leg of that Nations League tie.

More of that was on show when Scotland held Denmark to a goalless draw last month and the home team can be backed on the Asian Handicap to earn an important three points here.
