Preview

After winning Game 3 in an outing that lasted 18 Innings, the Los Angeles Dodgers might have felt that all of the momentum would be with them as they concluded two more games at home. In the worst case scenario, the Dodgers would certainly have felt they would be heading north of the border to Toronto with a lead, but things have panned out very differently.

Instead it is the Blue Jays who have rallied to win the last two games in the World Series and move to one more win of winning their first Championship in thirty-two years.

The criticism that has been flagged up about the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2025 Playoffs has been highlighted at the worst possible time- this is a team that have not been batting as well as they would have expected and Los Angeles have scored three runs across the last two games, which has given this Toronto Blue Jays a chance to level the World Series and then push on to bring a lead back home.

Game 5 started about as well as Toronto could have hoped- the first pitch thrown ended up in the stands and two pitches later Vladmir Guerrero Jr pushed his claims for World Series MVP by nailing another Home Run. From there Trey Yesavage dominated the Dodgers and the pressure is going to be on the Los Angeles starter to try and keep his team in with a chance of forcing a Game 7 decider.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto has a 3-1 record with a 1.57 ERA in four Playoff starts in 2025, while he has impressively put together back to back Completed Games. That includes the Game 2 effort right here in Canada when containing the Toronto Blue Jays to a single run and Los Angeles would love to see Yamamoto go very deep in this one.

The Blue Jays are going to counter with Kevin Gausman who has a 2-2 record and 2.55 ERA in his 2025 Playoff showings. He has made four starts, while Gausman also came out of the bullpen in the American League Championship Series decider and Toronto are going to be confident in the veteran.

Kevin Gausman was one Out away from completing 7 Innings when opposing Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Game 2, but he gave up consecutive Home Runs to absorb the loss. That meant allowing three runs in that start, but Gausman only gave up four Hits and that will give him confidence against an out of sorts Los Angeles batting lineup.

Prediction

They may have begun the World Series as the underdog, but the Toronto Blue Jays have shown up when it matters most and they are now a win away from securing a first Championship since the second of back to back successes in 1993.

Credit has to be given to the batting lineup for finding the big Hits when they have needed them most in the last couple of games.

The Blue Jays have also had a couple of pitchers give the Los Angeles batting lineup fits and confidence is going to be incredibly high.

They are facing Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the second time in the World Series having only tagged him for a single run and allowing the starter to put together a Complete Game the first time around. The batters will have learnt a thing or two about this pitcher, which is going to help in Game 6, while Toronto have to believe Kevin Gausman can keep things tight enough on the scoreboard.

Like the other starters, there is only so much Yoshinobu Yamamoto can do on the mound if the batting lineup continues to struggle as they have been.

Mookie Betts has admitted he has not been good enough, but a number of key players can say the same and time is running out for the Dodgers to get things going.

They've been close and the team are staying positive with the belief that one Hit could get everything turned around.

All of the momentum feels like it is with the Toronto Blue Jays, but Yamamoto can set another positive table for the Dodgers and they may just do enough to push through to force a Game 7 decider.

Both starting pitchers could be on relatively short leashes, despite their obvious qualities, and that is because of the situation within this World Series.

Prop markets are hard to gauge compared with the starters that had begun Game 5 and instead it may make sense to look at the batters.

Los Angeles have been struggling, but they do have power players that are never going to be far away from getting going.

Mookie Betts has a very strong career record against Kevin Gausman, but he has not shown much form at all. Instead it could pay to back Max Muncy to score another Home Run at 5.75 against Gausman having done so in Game 2 and having had plenty of success against this pitcher in his career.
