Tottenham Hotspur
Some of the recent fan reactions after Tottenham Hotspur matches have been a little baffling for those of us not associated with the club. Of course it is always going to sting when losing at home to a rival like Tottenham Hotspur did last Saturday, and you can understand the frustrations around the overall performance, but Thomas Frank has to be surprised that boos accompanied the final whistle.
They may have won the Europa League last season, but Tottenham Hotspur fans clearly wanted to move on from Ange Postecoglou after a really poor Premier League campaign. After three months of the new season, Thomas Frank has the side sitting in 6th place and just 2 points behind Manchester City in 2nd, which makes the fan reaction last week a little more surprising. Home form has been an issue for Spurs who have a 1-1-3 record here in the Premier League with 5 goals scored and conceded.
Tottenham Hotspur could afford to miss a Penalty and have a man sent off in the Champions League this past Tuesday and they did not miss a beat in a 4-0 win over Copenhagen. That snaps a run of consecutive defeats both overall and at home. Spurs have lost their last 2 Premier League games here against Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Djed Spence and Mohammed Kudus are both expected to be available, but Lucas Bergvall will return after the November international break. A host of players are hoping to use the next fortnight to recover, but Thomas Frank is still expected to make some rotation to his starting eleven to keep things as fresh as possible.
Manchester United
This month will mark one year in the Manchester United job for Ruben Amorim and he will be keen for his team to maintain their unbeaten run through to the November international break. Recent signs have been positive, but Manchester United are still lacking some consistency and there is a vulnerable look to the team when they do concede.
That was evident last weekend as Manchester United conceded twice very quickly at the start of the second half at the City Ground, but Amorim was pleased to see his team fight back for a point. This means Manchester United are 8th in the Premier League table, although just 2 points behind rivals Manchester City in 2nd place. Improving the away record is key to any success Manchester United can have this season and the side travel to North London with a 1-2-2 record away from Old Trafford.
Manchester United are unbeaten in 4 games in the Premier League and they have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 to move closer to the Champions League places. After losing back to back games at Manchester City and Brentford, Manchester United have scored late goals in earning a win at Liverpool and a draw at Nottingham Forest.
Lisandro Martinez looks to be the only absentee this weekend.
Head to Head
Tottenham Hotspur beat Manchester United all four times they played one another in the 2024/25 season.
That includes the Premier League double without conceding a goal and Spurs also won a home League Cup Quarter Final tie 4-3 and of course the famous win in Bilbao in the Europa League Final.
Tottenham Hotspur are now unbeaten in 4 at home against Manchester United and have won 3 in a row against them.
Prediction
The winner of this opening Premier League game of the weekend will be able to move into 2nd place in the standings for several hours and perhaps even overnight.
Both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United have earned 17 points so far this season, but it has not all be smooth sailing.
Thomas Frank's first three months have been relatively decent, especially compared with the Premier League form of last season. Spurs have also made a positive start in the Champions League, but the fans have not always been convinced about the style and the home form has been a let down to the point that the supporters were willing to boo the team off last weekend.
Losing to Chelsea in such a meek manner will never be accepted, but the Tottenham Hotspur players bounced back with a big win over Copenhagen and have some momentum.
That word also applies to Manchester United who are unbeaten in 4 games since Ruben Amorim found himself under real pressure after another disappointing performance and result in the 3-1 loss at Brentford.
In reality that is easily the worst overall performance Manchester United have produced this season, but they have picked up 10 points from 12 since then and there are positive signs.
However, this is a team that can still be vulnerable when things do not go right and they have made it a habit to concede goals in bunches. That cost them two points against Nottingham Forest last weekend, while Brighton rallied from 3-0 down at Old Trafford to make things a little nervy at 3-2.
Something will have to give in this game.
The underlying Tottenham Hotspur numbers have been really poor, especially in the attacking third in the Premier League. They created almost nothing against Chelsea last weekend and were disappointing in home games against Bournemouth, Wolves and Aston Villa, while the defensive mistakes last weekend proved costly in the end.
Previously they had looked a bit more solid at the back, but going forward is a work in progress with so many important players on the sidelines. Set pieces are going to be an avenue of threat, especially against this Manchester United team, but that lack of consistency in the final third leaves Tottenham Hotspur in an exposed place.
Backing Manchester United to win is difficult simply because they have not been very consistent away from home.
They had late chances to win at the City Ground and Manchester United are scoring more goals with the new signings made. This will offer plenty of encouragement, but keeping the attacking threat for a whole away game has been beyond them and this Tottenham Hotspur defensive shape has played well enough in the main.
Last season they also kept 3 clean sheets against Manchester United and that will inspire plenty of confidence, even if Ruben Amorim's team created decent openings and just lacked that finishing touch in the final third.
It is not an easy game to call- the feeling is that Manchester United can do enough to win, but that might need a clean sheet and this is not a team that has enough of those.
However, Tottenham Hotspur have not exactly been a free, attacking team and the under 2.5 goals option here looks vastly overpriced.
We haven't seen many of those in Manchester United away games, but Tottenham Hotspur can make this scrappy and that should suit the home team. Whether it is enough to earn a positive result is another matter and it could become a stodgy fixture if there is not an early goal to spark things off.
Either way, the odds on the under 2.5 goal market look too big here and that is worth an interest from a tough fixture to predict to open the Premier League weekend.
