Nottingham Forest v Leeds United

This game is live on TV

Nottingham Forest

After a miserable opening ten games in the Premier League season, Sean Dyche is likely to be well aware that the immediate concern for himself and his staff is to drag Nottingham Forest out of the bottom three. They are also involved in the Europa League, but merely making the Knock Out Rounds is the ambition right now with the hope that Nottingham Forest can prioritise it later in the campaign when the Premier League position is more secure.

Brian Clough always enjoyed facing Leeds United and it is one of his former players who now leads Nottingham Forest after two previous managers have already been Sacked. The point earned against Manchester United last weekend actually dropped Nottingham Forest one place into 19th place in the Premier League table, while they now have a 1-1-3 record at the City Ground in the top flight.

Nottingham Forest have lost 1 of the 4 games played in all competitions under Sean Dyche, but they have not won any of the last 3 since beating Porto in the Europa League. The Tricky Trees had lost 4 in a row at the City Ground in all competitions, but they are now unbeaten in 2 here following the win over Porto and draw with Manchester United.

Douglas Luiz is set to miss out, while both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Chris Wood are doubts. Igor Jesus served a European ban on Thursday and could be set to lead the line.

Leeds United

Daniel Farke's Leeds United have made a solid enough start to the campaign and 11 points has to be seen as a positive return. Home form is proving to be the absolute key for the team though and Leeds United will be under a bit of pressure to be more competitive away from Elland Road if they are going to find a way to maintain Premier League status.

The side were beaten 3-0 at Brighton last weekend and that means Leeds United now have a 1-0-4 away record. That loss has left the team in 16th place in the Premier League table and 4 points clear of the relegation zone, but the standings could look a lot different by Sunday night if Leeds United are not able to earn a positive result in the East Midlands.

Leeds United have not only won 1 of their last 5 Premier League games, but they head into this fixture having lost 3 of the last 4 played. The side picked up an important 1-3 win at Wolves in September, but Leeds United have been beaten 2-0 at Burnley and 3-0 at Brighton since then.

Jayden Bogle is hoping to shake off an illness, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is dealing with a knock and is a doubt. Wilfried Gnonto could be a part of the travelling squad this weekend.

Head to Head

Nottingham Forest and Leeds United last met in the 2022/23 Premier League season and both beat the other at home.

The 1-0 win for Nottingham Forest in February 2023 means they have beaten Leeds United on 3 straight occasions at the City Ground.

Prediction

There is little doubt that Sean Dyche is going to have this Nottingham Forest squad going back to basics after a really poor thirty-nine days under previous manager Ange Postecoglou.

The sample is pretty small at four games, but the underlying numbers have shown Nottingham Forest are much improved defensively and not giving up the kind of opportunities they had been previously. All season the defending has not reached the level of the last campaign, but there are positive signs and that gives Nottingham Forest the foundation from which to build.

Nottingham Forest have also looked pretty decent going forward in the four games under the new manager and they look to have an edge in this fixture against a Leeds United team who have not had the same impact away from home as they have at Elland Road.

However, Leeds United have usually been more competitive than they showed at Brighton last weekend, which is arguably the poorest performance of the season.

Unfortunately, Daniel Farke's fears about the lack of firepower in the final third has really been highlighted in the away games played and it could be the issue for Leeds United again this weekend. They can use set pieces to hurt Nottingham Forest, who are still trying to find the solutions in those defensive situations, but Leeds United may struggle to deal with the hosts the other way and the lack of away goals cannot be ignored.

Nottingham Forest have lost all 3 Premier League games played after the Europa League fixtures completed, which raises some concerns, but backing the host on the Asian Handicap is again the best way forward.
