Greece

There is going to be a huge amount of regret in the Greece squad that they have been eliminated from reaching the World Cup Finals with two games to spare in this Qualifying Group. Things started off as well as Greece could have hoped, but next summer will represent twelve years since the nation last played in a major international tournament.

Most would have expected top Seed Denmark to win this Group, but Greece would have seen Scotland as a very beatable opponent considering they did that in the Nations League Play Offs back in March. The loss at Hampden Park last month is one that Greece will find hard to ever explain and ultimately it proved costly with a second defeat to Denmark leaving the Greek team with just 3 points on the board.

Greece entered the World Cup Qualifying Group behind 3 wins in a row in all competitions and they improved that by opening the section with a victory over Belarus. However, they have since lost 3 in a row in the World Cup Qualifiers and Greece's 3 game winning run at home was ended emphatically in a 0-3 loss to Denmark.

Scotland

The tournament may be a little under three years away, but the Euro 2028 schedule was released and Scotland fans and the Football Association will get to see the team play at home if they Qualify for those Finals. Steve Clarke will not be thinking further than the upcoming two games to be played this month as his focus is on the 2026 World Cup Finals rather than the big tournament to be played in 2028.

Two wins were secured at home last month in this World Cup Qualifying Group and that means Scotland are keeping pace with Denmark in the section with both teams on 10 points. It is the Danes who hold a significant advantage in the Group and that means Scotland HAVE to beat them in the final Qualifier. However, the challenge before that is earning any kind of positive result on Saturday to make sure three points against Denmark will allow Scotland to finish top of the Group.

Scotland were beaten by Greece in the Nations League Relegation/Promotion Play Off in March and followed up with another defeat to Iceland, but they are now unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions. The side are not only unbeaten in 5 away games, but they have won 4 of those fixtures.

Head to Head

Greece might have beaten Scotland 3-1 in the Nations League Play Off on aggregate, but they had lost the First Leg at home.

Last month they scored first at Hampden Park before capitulating in a 3-1 loss.

Greece will be hosting Scotland for just the third time and the previous couple of fixtures have both ended in 1-0 wins- the hosts won the first of those back in 1994, but Scotland won most recently back in March.

Prediction

After elimination was confirmed in this World Cup Qualifying Group last month, you do have to wonder what kind of motivation Greece will have for this fixture.

They will be upset with the way they blew the lead they deserved to have at Scotland last month so revenge can push Greece forward.

A similar level of performance to the one produced in the 3-1 defeat to Scotland will certainly be one that will result in stronger outcomes for Greece more often than not.

The key will be finding the intensity in what amounts to a dead rubber.

Steve Clarke and Scotland have picked up 10 points in this Group, but they did not impress in either Qualifier played last month. The fans were not very happy, even if the results were good enough to secure Scotland a top two finish in this Group, while Captain Andy Robertson made it clear that results are all that matters.

The nation are under some pressure to end the near thirty year wait to play in a World Cup Finals again and Scotland need a positive result to give themselves a real chance to top this Group.

The manager may choose to play a team that is capable of frustrating the hosts early and then look to counter Greece when the energy dips in the home performance.

However, Scotland will have to be at it much better than they were last month in the two Qualifiers played and Greece look a big price to find a way to get themselves motivated enough to win the fixture. This will almost certainly mean Scotland have to join the Play Offs next March in their bid to join the big party in North America, but that is not the concern of the home team who will want to conclude the home Qualifiers with some positivity.
