Burnley
The last international break of the season is over and Burnley will be looking at the next few weeks as a key time of the season in their bid to avoid the drop back into the Championship. Games will be coming thick and fast through to the middle of January and home form is going to be key for Scott Parker's team after suffering a couple of defeats before the break.
They are 17th in the Premier League table, but the 3-2 defeat to West Ham United means Burnley are only outside of the bottom three on goal difference. The side have a 2-1-2 record at Turf Moor in the top flight this season where they have scored 5 goals and conceded 4.
Burnley had won important League games against Leeds United and Wolves before suffering consecutive defeats against Arsenal and West Ham United. The home loss to the Premier League leaders was the first Burnley had suffered in the top flight since September when losing to Liverpool and they had earned 4 points from a possible 6 in between those defeats.
The squad looks to be returning from the international break in the same shape as when Burnley entered this period.
Chelsea
The big games keep coming up for Chelsea, who are fighting on multiple fronts under Enzo Maresca, and the manager has cooled any talk about him being replaced by overseeing some positive results. It is important for the squad to remain focused, even with huge fixtures at Stamford Bridge coming up over the next several days.
Strong form was being produced by Chelsea ahead of the November international break and the manager will be hoping that the momentum can be quickly regained. The Blues moved up into 3rd place in the Premier League table two weeks ago and they are 6 points behind leaders Arsenal, who visit West London next Sunday. Before that, Chelsea will be looking to improve the 3-1-1 away record in the top flight.
Chelsea were upset by Sunderland at the end of October, but have bounced back to go unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions, while winning 3 of those fixtures to restore some confidence. Since losing to Manchester United at Old Trafford, Chelsea had won 4 in a row on their travels in all competitions. However, that run was ended in the surprising 2-2 draw at Qarabag in the last round of Champions League fixtures.
Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer are expected to miss out, while Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez were resting through the international break to be available this weekend.
Head to Head
Two seasons ago, Chelsea took four Premier League points from Burnley with the majority earned from a 1-4 win at Turf Moor.
Recent visits to Burnley have been very successful and Chelsea have won 6 straight times here.
In each of the last 5 victories at this ground, Chelsea have scored at least three goals.
Prediction
The Premier League will not have to go through another international break until March and the festive period effectively begins on Saturday.
There will be nine League fixtures played by top flight clubs across a seven week period and that is going to have a big impact on the standings right across the board.
Fourth bottom plays third in this opening League fixture of the weekend and Burnley and Chelsea will come out of the November international break in contrasting recent form.
Burnley lost twice in a row and might have appreciated the chance to reset, while Chelsea had been in strong form and Enzo Maresca will be keen to get his team motoring immediately.
Home form has proven to be much stronger this season than it has been over the last couple of years, but Chelsea are one of the stronger away teams in the top flight through the early part of the campaign.
Even without Cole Palmer, Chelsea have found the right solutions in the forward areas and they will certainly feel they have enough threat in the final third to win this game. Over recent years, Chelsea have really enjoyed visiting this part of the North West and they have scored a lot of goals in the games at Turf Moor, while The Blues have been creating a lot of quality chances in the final third.
Scott Parker's team will have to be respected- they have made things difficult for all visitors this ground this season and they are likely to be set up to do the same on Saturday.
However, Parker needs to find the balance between attack and defence to help Burnley push clear of the bottom three and that has been an issue. They have simply not been as creative in the final third as is needed and Burnley may struggle to get much joy out of a Chelsea team that have been playing with some real rhythm and chemistry.
Chelsea have been playing with confidence away from home in recent weeks too and the feeling is that they will have too much for the hosts out of the international break.
