Newcastle United
There are clubs that will always receive the biggest sporting headlines and others who have a big following, but who can fly under the radar a little bit compared to the top names. Eddie Howe is perhaps fortunate to be managing the United of Newcastle rather than Manchester as his team continues to struggle for any consistency and sit closer to the bottom three than the top four after more than a quarter of the season has been played.
The manager will have some credit in the bank for helping Newcastle United win the League Cup last season and for guiding them back into the Champions League, but Howe will know that his team are much better than 14th in the Premier League standings. They are just 2 points clear of the relegation places, while Newcastle United have a 3-0-2 record at St James' Park in the top flight.
Newcastle United have won 4 of their last 6 games in all competitions, but have suffered consecutive Premier League defeats, despite taking the lead against both West Ham United and Brentford. They have really been struggling away from home, but it has been better at St James' Park where Newcastle United have won 5 in a row in all competitions since conceding two late goals in a 1-2 defeat to Arsenal.
Injuries had been piling up before the November international break, but Eddie Howe could have Nick Pope, Tino Livramento, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon available this weekend. Dan Burn is suspended, while Yoane Wissa is not going to be rushed back from a knee issue.
Manchester City
After Arsenal dropped two points in the North East on Saturday, the fixture between Manchester City and Liverpool on Sunday was one that felt like the winner would be the clearest challenger to the current League leaders. Pep Guardiola has to be really pleased with the Manchester City performance in beating the Champions, even if they had some help from a semi-controversial VAR decision, and the team have a run of games that could really see them pick up some momentum.
Three points last time out means Manchester City are 2nd in the Premier League table and 4 points behind leaders Arsenal, while having the chance to close that gap twenty-four hours before the latter are set to play. The side have a 2-1-2 away record in the Premier League where Manchester City have scored 7 goals and conceded 4.
Manchester City have won 11 of the last 14 games played in all competitions, including the last 4 in a row. They have also won 4 of the last 6 away games played, although Manchester City have suffered a 1-0 defeat at Villa Park during that time in the last Premier League fixture played on their travels.
Rodri is hoping to be available to join the match day squad, while the manager will be glad to hear that the majority of his key players sound fit enough to perform out of the international break.
Head to Head
Manchester City took four points from Newcastle United in the Premier League last season, but the game at St James' Park ended 1-1.
Newcastle United have not won any of the last 6 home League games against Manchester City, but half of those fixtures have ended in draws.
Prediction
There are two angles that feel right when analysing this game and that is either backing this fixture having at least three goals shared out or Newcastle United to avoid a defeat against the odds on favourites Manchester City.
All three games against Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League and Barcelona in the Champions League have ended with at least three goals shared out at St James' Park this season. In the main Newcastle United have defended pretty well here, but those are the top visiting teams and Manchester City have to be included amongst those.
Before the 1-1 draw here last season, 6 Premier League games in succession hosted by Newcastle United against Manchester City had also ended with at least three goals shared out.
However, the November international break looks to have come at a good time for Eddie Howe and his squad, which should be much healthier for this fixture, and Manchester City have been more functional than fluid so far this season.
With that in mind, the feeling is that there will be goals shared out in this one, but the suggestion is that Newcastle United can do enough to avoid a defeat.
Only injury time goals for Liverpool and Arsenal have resulted in wins here- Erling Haaland is clearly going to be very dangerous as his hot form in front of goal shows little sign of ending, but Newcastle United have to be relatively comfortable with what to expect from a visiting team that have scored just three goals in the last 4 away Premier League games played.
Manchester City have only won one of those, while the underlying numbers show that there has been very little between them and the hosts in the fixtures played.
Eddie Howe's Newcastle United team have been much more confident at home than they have on their travels and that is also a factor.
Arsenal dominated here in the second half, but Liverpool were given a real test, while Newcastle United had enough chances to avoid a defeat against Barcelona too.
The two week international break will ensure that key players are able to play in this one and Newcastle United will also be encouraged by Nick Woltemade's form for Germany. Anthony Gordon is trending towards returning to action too and that would be a huge boost for the home team, while having the support of the home crowd is a real factor in this fixture.
Big teams have won here this season, which is a concern for Newcastle United, but they can do enough defensively to give themselves an opportunity.
This is not a Manchester City team running rampant and they simply look a little too short here, and the price is one that has to be opposed.
