Leeds United
The pressure is growing on Daniel Farke as manager of Leeds United and there is a concern that the fans are beginning to turn against him, despite the successes of last season and the Promotion back into the Premier League. Losing matches is going to happen at a higher level, but the last couple of Leeds United performances have been alarming and Farke will need a big reaction right out of the international break.
The side have slipped down into 16th place in the Premier League table, but the loss to one of the teams occupying a spot in the relegation zone means Leeds United are only 2 points clear of Nottingham Forest in 19th place. It does mean they potentially kick off inside the relegation zone on Sunday afternoon, but the focus has to be on improving the 2-2-1 record at Elland Road where Leeds United have scored 6 goals and conceded 5.
Leeds United have lost 4 of the last 5 Premier League games played and the concern is the fact that a couple of those defeats have been against Burnley and Nottingham Forest who sit below them in the standings. However, both of those defeats were away from home and Leeds United did beat West Ham United 2-1 in the last game played at Elland Road.
Sebastian Bornauw and Wilfried Gnonto are both hoping to be part of the squad this Sunday.
Aston Villa
Unai Emery has to be really pleased with some of the form shown by his Aston Villa squad in the last several weeks and the manager may be hoping for some January reinforcements to ensure a strong end to the campaign. Getting back into the Champions League remains the ultimate ambition for Aston Villa and they are on track both domestically and in Europe to do that.
After a slow start to the season when Aston Villa were struggling for goals, never mind points, the side have picked up the standards and have moved up into 6th place in the Premier League table. The Villans head to Yorkshire with a 1-2-2 record away from home in the top flight where they have scored 3 goals and conceded 5.
Aston Villa have won 8 of the last 10 games played in all competitions and crushed Bournemouth 4-0 at Villa Park two weeks ago. There is no doubt that the away form has been much more patchy and Aston Villa have won 2 of the 8 fixtures played on their travels this season. The side have also lost consecutive away games at Go Ahead Eagles and Liverpool.
Ezri Konsa, Matty Cash and Amadou Onana are all suffering with knocks that will need to be overcome if they are to travel with the squad.
Head to Head
Aston Villa earned four points against Leeds United when these clubs last met in the 2022/23 Premier League season.
The game at Elland Road finished goalless that season and has extended Leeds United's run to 5 without a home victory against Aston Villa.
However, 3 of those 5 games have ended in draws.
Prediction
Visiting Elland Road looks like it will be a challenging experience for all teams this season and the two week international break should have given Daniel Farke and the squad the chance to reset.
They had been mired in a poor run of form, but the majority of the setbacks in that run had been away from Elland Road.
In fact Leeds United beat West Ham United in the last fixture played here, while Tottenham Hotspur are the only team to escape with three points from this part of Yorkshire. Thomas Frank would likely admit that 'escape' is the right word after Leeds United dominated the chances being created and that will give Daniel Farke confidence, even as the pressure begins to build around him.
This is a tough home game for Leeds United in the first of two Premier League games to be played on Sunday.
Unai Emery's Aston Villa have quietly moved up into 6th place in the top flight standings and the early season poor form is now firmly behind them.
However, they may have benefited from a fixture list that has offered Aston Villa a lot of opportunities to play at home- this is a team that have won just twice away from Villa Park all season in 8 attempts and Aston Villa have suffered consecutive away defeats.
The underlying numbers show that Aston Villa have still not quite got it right away from home and they have been far from convincing.
It has to be a motivating factor for Leeds United, although the visiting team have to be respected in the way they have battled for results even when not at their best.
The edge has to be with Leeds United to earn a positive result, but they may not have quite enough to win the game.
Aston Villa look a vulnerable 'favourite' and the expectation is that the home team may have enough to pick up a point and just ease the chatter around the manager.
3 of the last 5 between Leeds United and Aston Villa at Elland Road have ended in draws and this fixture has every chance of being another.
