Liverpool

It feels like as much that went right for Liverpool twelve months ago is going wrong this time around and the pressure is building on Arne Slot to get this team to move out of an extended poor patch of form. They did not start too badly on Saturday and the underlying attacking numbers remain decent, but Liverpool were well beaten by the end of ninety minutes against Nottingham Forest and there is a real vulnerability about them at the back.

They will be looking to get back on track in the Premier League next Sunday, but for now the attention turns back to the Champions League where Liverpool have been in better form. The Reds are up into 8th place in the Champions League standings with 9 points from four matches played and finishing in the top eight remains important to avoid extra, unnecessary, fixtures in February.

Liverpool have lost 8 of the last 11 games in all competitions and they have suffered 3-0 defeats either side of the November international break against Manchester City and Nottingham Forest. After beating Aston Villa and Real Madrid in consecutive games at Anfield, Liverpool suffered a big setback in the defeat on Saturday.

Florian Wirtz is a doubt, but he is closer to a return than Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley. Arne Slot could choose to bring in the likes of Andy Robertson and Hugo Ekitike for this fixture.

PSV Eindhoven

They have taken a solid lead in the Dutch Eredivisie and PSV Eindhoven have to be seen as strong favourites to win the title for a third season in a row. Peter Bosz will be very familiar with Arne Slot and he will be looking to guide his PSV team to another upset of Liverpool having beaten them in the Group Stage of the Champions League last season.

It was a journey that ultimately ended in a big aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the Last 16, but that is a solid achievement for PSV Eindhoven and they will be looking to match that run again. After a really poor defeat on Match Day 1, PSV Eindhoven have to be given credit for moving up into 18th place in the Champions League standings, although there is work to do in order to avoid elimination before the Knock Out Rounds across the last four Group fixtures to be played.

PSV Eindhoven were beaten by Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League, but they have bounced back to put together an 11 game unbeaten run in all competitions. The side have won 8 of those fixtures, while PSV Eindhoven have not lost an away game in any competitions since early March 2024. PSV head to Anfield having won 7 of 9 away games played in all competitions this season.

Head to Head

PSV Eindhoven beat Liverpool 3-2 at home on Match Day 8 of the Champions League Group Stage last season.

Things have been tough for PSV when visiting Anfield in the past and they have lost all 3 games at Liverpool, although these clubs have not met here since October 2008.

Prediction

The home fans will be patient, especially inside Anfield, but Arne Slot and the players have to know that the recent performances have not really been good enough.

There have been some positives, but Liverpool's defending has been far below levels expected and it has put a lot of pressure on the attackers to make up for the goals being conceded.

Earlier in the season they were managing to do that, but Liverpool have suffered back to back 3-0 defeats and there is a lack of confidence amongst some of the new faces being brought into the club. Florian Wirtz is not expected to play this week, while Alexander Isak has struggled to get himself fully fit and has been largely anonymous when he has been on the pitch.

Others have not reached the levels they had been producing when winning the Premier League title, but the malaise has perhaps been evident for longer than a couple of months and that will be the concern for the manager.

Liverpool should have the quality to bounce back on Wednesday in the Champions League environment with the Premier League clubs showing early dominance in that competition.

That includes Liverpool winning three of four fixtures played and they are facing a PSV Eindhoven team that were perhaps fortunate to escape with away draws at Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos.

PSV have won the Dutch title twice in a row and they are favourites to finish the season as Champions again, but Peter Bosz will be aware of the step up in level that is required to compete in the Champions League. Getting out of the Group Stage will be seen as a success, although PSV Eindhoven fans will demand more, and PSV have shown some resilience at the back and quality in the final third that will deserve plenty of respect.

Considering the successes some have had in recent visits to Anfield, PSV Eindhoven should not have an inferiority complex.

However, Liverpool still retain enough about themselves to believe that the underlying numbers will turn results back around in their favour- they are creating chances and Liverpool have shown in wins over Aston Villa and Real Madrid at Anfield that there is still enough fire burning to believe they can take care of this level of opponent.

Scoring first is key, if only to build up the confidence, and Liverpool being able to do that should lead to a relatively comfortable win.
