Paris Saint-Germain
Twelve months ago, Paris Saint-Germain looked anything but a potential Champions League Winner and there is little doubt that teams will want to begin peaking in January rather than November. However, it may be important to finish in the top eight in the Champions League standings rather than having to play an extra Knock Out Round in February and Paris Saint-Germain are looking good at the halfway stage of the Group Stage.
They have picked up 9 points from the four matches played and Paris Saint-Germain have been working through a tougher schedule than some of the rivals around them. The defending Champions are 5th in the Champions League standings and they will believe a couple more wins and a draw might be enough to secure a top eight finish, which is the ambition rather than wanting to finish top of the entire Group.
Paris Saint-Germain saw the 100% record in the Champions League ended against Bayern Munich on Match Day 4, but they have won 3 of the last 4 games in all competitions around that loss. Recent home form has been a touch more erratic with Paris Saint-Germain winning half of the previous 4 games played here in all competitions.
Achraf Hakimi, Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele are expected to be missing for the home team.
Tottenham Hotspur
The heavy loss at the Emirates Stadium is going to have really hurt the Tottenham Hotspur fans and there are some wondering if the club have made a mistake in appointing Thomas Frank. The manager is going to be hugely frustrated too, especially as Tottenham Hotspur struggled to lay a glove on their North London rivals.
Games remain very difficult on the schedule and Tottenham Hotspur have another big test in the Champions League when travelling to face the European Champions. They are 10th in the Champions League standings and Tottenham Hotspur are unbeaten through four games, but those have been against Villarreal, Bodo/Glimt, Monaco and Copenhagen and none are above 19th in the standings, while three would be eliminated if the Group Stage was to end today.
Tottenham Hotspur have won 1 of the last 5 games played in all competitions and they have lost 3 of those matches. They have suffered consecutive away defeats at Newcastle United and Arsenal and Spurs have conceded six goals in those defeats.
Brennan Johnson is suspended and the Tottenham Hotspur squad is still hugely stretched by injury.
Head to Head
These teams met in the UEFA Super Cup back in August and Tottenham Hotspur led 0-2 and were moments away from winning another piece of silverware.
Unfortunately for Spurs fans, Paris Saint-Germain roared back to earn a 2-2 draw and then win on Penalties.
Prediction
When the UEFA Super Cup was played, Tottenham Hotspur might have been in a bit more of an exciting place under new manager Thomas Frank.
They begun the first month of competitive action under Frank with some very good results and performances, but there has been a real decline in everything around the team.
Tottenham Hotspur were really poor on Sunday at Arsenal and that will be hard to brush under the carpet.
The real worry is that Spurs were very poor against Chelsea in a home loss against another London rival, while they were seemingly coasting to a defeat against Manchester United before two late goals to turn things around.
However, they conceded late to drop two points and Thomas Frank has been struggling to find the balance between attack and defence.
Now the team have to travel to the French capital to face the European Champions and Paris Saint-Germain will be keen to bounce back from the home loss to Bayern Munich on Match Day 4.
Paris Saint-Germain have not been in the most consistent form, which is similar to what was happening twelve months ago, but they still have very capable players in the final third. They have also been more effective in the Champions League and the points on the board are more impressive when noting who Paris Saint-Germain have played.
On the other side, Tottenham Hotspur have been operating against a weaker schedule and this is a big step up for them against an opponent who dominated Premier League clubs last season.
Spurs have simply not been in good enough form to expect anything other than another routine victory against them.
