Nottingham Forest
It may not have been a decision that sat well with many outside of the City Ground, but Nottingham Forest fans made it clear that Ange Postecoglou was not going to be the man they wanted to back. A poor run ended his short time in charge of the club and the appointment of Sean Dyche may not have excited, but the latter has made an immediate impact with the squad.
A style that is much more similar to Nuno Espirito Santo suits the squad and Nottingham Forest have produced some big results in the Premier League that has seen them climb out from a precarious position. More work has to be put in to secure top flight status, but it does allow Sean Dyche to place some importance in the Europa League, which would have been a competition targeted by the higher-ups at Nottingham Forest before the season began.
Nottingham Forest have lost 1 of the 6 games played under Sean Dyche and they are unbeaten in 4 ahead of this Match Day 5 fixture in the Europa League. They are now 23rd in the Europa League standings having picked up four points from the last couple of fixtures, both under Dyche, and Nottingham Forest have won 2 of 3 games played at the City Ground.
Changes have been made for the Europa League fixtures to balance domestic and European commitments, but Sean Dyche has picked strong teams in the two games played in this competition.
Malmo
Qualifying defeats have prevented Malmo from pushing their way into the Champions League Group Stage over the last sixteen months, but they have been getting close to competing with the elite of the continent. They did need to win a Europa League Qualifier to earn a spot in the League Phase of this competition, but Malmo are finding it tough to pick up the points needed to reach the Knock Out Rounds.
Last season they finished 31st in the Europa League standings and Malmo earned 5 points in that running of the competition. Four games have been played in this Group Stage and Malmo have only earned a single point, which is more concerning when noting that three of the four games have been played at home.
Malmo had won 1 of the previous 7 games in all competitions before earning a victory against GAIS in the Swedish Allsvenskan, which came to a conclusion earlier this month. They had lost back to back away games in all competitions, including a thumping 3-0 defeat at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, but Malmo are unbeaten in 2 in a row on their travels.
Head to Head
These two most famously met in the European Cup Final in 1979, which was won by Nottingham Forest.
They last met in the UEFA Cup in the 1995/96 season and it was Nottingham Forest who again came out on top, although through Away Goals thanks to a 1-0 win at the City Ground in the Second Round Second Leg.
Prediction
Two English clubs competed in the Europa League Final last season and both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest could have a big impact in the competition this season.
The former have more experience and have made a stronger start to the campaign, but Sean Dyche has gotten his Nottingham Forest team moving in a positive direction both in this competition and in the Premier League.
The win at Anfield is a huge boost for the confidence and Nottingham Forest are beginning to look a bit better defensively, which is the foundation from which they can pick up big results.
Nottingham Forest vs Malmo will bring up big memories for older fans who may remember seeing the teams compete in the European Cup Final forty-six years ago.
There is a much bigger gap between the top European Leagues and the Swedish League these days and Malmo will struggle to stay competitive if they cannot find something. They have not played very well in the League Phase of the Europa League over the last fourteen months and Malmo were well beaten at Viktoria Plzen, while Nottingham Forest have beaten Porto pretty comfortably here in the competition.
Changes are likely going to be made by Sean Dyche with the Premier League still the priority, but this Nottingham Forest squad should be good enough to still come through with a relatively comfortable victory.
