West Ham United

A third victory in a row was snatched away from West Ham United last weekend in the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, but it is another positive result for Nuno Espirito Santo and his players to take into this weekend. All of a sudden West Ham United are beginning to look like a team that will be capable of surviving in the top flight, but things can change very quickly in football.

They are now 17th in the Premier League table, but West Ham United play on Sunday and they could potentially be back inside the bottom three when this fixture kicks off. That will not be a big concern for the manager who will simply be focusing on making sure his team continue to pick up Premier League points, while also looking to build on the 2-0-4 record produced at the London Stadium.

West Ham United have put together a 3 game unbeaten run in the Premier League and earning 7 points from those fixtures has pulled them out of the relegation zone. They have come from behind to win each of the last 2 League games played at the London Stadium against Newcastle United and Burnley.

Konstantinos Mavrapanos and Crysencio Summerville are hoping to overcome knocks, while Lucas Pacqueta is back from a suspension.

Liverpool

Things are spiralling out of control for Arne Slot and his English Champions and another heavy defeat has put the Dutchman under significant pressure. You have to expect the Liverpool board to have some patience, but Slot needs results after the latest thumping at Anfield, which was a real fortress for the team in the previous campaign.

Last weekend they were crushed by Nottingham Forest and that has dropped Liverpool into 12th place in the Premier League table, albeit just 3 points behind the top four. The situation could be turned around pretty quickly, but Liverpool need results, beginning this weekend as they look to improve the disappointing 2-0-4 away record.

Liverpool had beaten Aston Villa and Real Madrid in back to back games at the beginning of the month, but they have now lost 3 in a row in all competitions and all by three goal margins. The capitulation in the away form has been really concerning and Liverpool have lost 5 of the last 6 games played on their travels and 4 of those have been in the Premier League.

Alisson missed out on Wednesday with a virus and could be considered a doubt, while Florian Wirtz is hoping to be available. Hugo Ekitike picked up a knock in the 1-4 defeat to PSV Eindhoven and is another doubt, while the likes of Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson have to be pushing for returns.

Head to Head

Liverpool beat West Ham United in the League Cup and twice in the Premier League last season.

They have won 4 of the last 6 visits to the London Stadium, including a crushing 0-5 win here last season.

Prediction

If this match had been played a month ago, Liverpool would likely have been a considerably shorter favourite to leave East London with three points.

That would have been perhaps more to do with West Ham United's poor form, but Nuno Espirito Santo has found something that works for his team and the recent results have been much better. Playing at the London Stadium was a real challenge for the squad, but back to back wins here over Newcastle United and Burnley will have given the team confidence, while also making sure the fans are back onside.

Credit has to be given to West Ham United for winning those two games after conceding the opening goal and this is a team that will look to counter Liverpool.

Last season Nuno Espirito Santo led Nottingham Forest to four points against Liverpool and his tactics did give Arne Slot problems to deal with.

The Dutchman is under significant pressure after Liverpool's latest defensive capitulation- the defeat to PSV Eindhoven is one thing, but the manner of the defeat is a real concern and Liverpool need to come together and find the solutions to the recent problems.

Mistakes are being punished every time they are being made, while Liverpool have been wasteful in the final third and that was evident again on Wednesday.

Heads have been dropping when the team have 'inevitably' conceded and this has become a much tougher challenge for Liverpool compared with what it would have expected to be even several days ago. The goals conceded in the home defeats to Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven have been embarrassing, and there has been a lack of leadership on the pitch, which is another concern.

Liverpool have had a very good record in East London in recent years, but even that may not be enough to build up too much confidence.

Arne Slot will know his team need to make a positive start and they will be encouraged by the chances that West Ham United gave away against Bournemouth last week. Burnley also produced some big chances and you have to almost keep faith in Liverpool in a fixture like this, even if they have been in horrific form.

Those who would rather not back any team to win this fixture may look at Virgil van Dijk to have a shot on target as he continues to pose a big threat from set pieces. The Hammers are still vulnerable from that avenue in matches and his 2.62 price looks far too big and could be the best approach to take in this fixture.

Liverpool are likely to find a winner, but backing the Captain to step up and find a shot on target might be something that keeps backers interested throughout the ninety minutes and especially if the Champions suffer another poor day in the office.
