Brighton

Fabian Hurzeler will be well aware that a couple of poor results will see Brighton slide back down the table, but his team have been producing a lot more positives than negatives in recent outings. That includes an impressive 0-2 win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday in a fixture that Brighton fully deserved to win and the manager will be looking for his squad to back that up with another victory as they return home for consecutive League fixtures.

The top of the Premier League is pretty tightly bunched once you look beyond leaders Arsenal and Brighton are up to 5th in the standings and just 3 points behind 2nd placed Manchester City. Make no mistake, this is a season in which the Brighton board will be demanding a return to European Football and Fabian Hurzeler will know the home form is key to that. The Seagulls have a 4-2-0 record at the Amex Stadium where they have scored 12 goals and conceded 6.

Brighton are not only unbeaten in 4 Premier League games, but they have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 to put some momentum into the season. Since blowing a 2-0 lead against Tottenham Hotspur in an eventual 2-2 draw, Brighton have won 3 Premier League games in succession at the Amex Stadium.

Georginio Rutter had to be checked for a head injury on Saturday and he is a doubt for this one, even if the manager has downplayed the issue. Both James Milner and Kaoru Mitoma are hoping to be available on Sunday, but this game may come too soon.

Aston Villa

The good times continue to roll forward for Unai Emery and his Aston Villa team following another Premier League victory. The latest came at Villa Park against Wolves and everyone associated with the club will be looking to keep the positive run going and especially just days before leaders Arsenal visit the West Midlands.

The latest three points earned has pushed Aston Villa into 4th place and the form has begun to get the attention of the media with some suggesting they could become a title challenger. For the manager, the focus is to make sure Aston Villa keep things ticking over before potentially adding to the squad in the January transfer window, much as they did last season. The Villans travel to the South Coast with a 2-2-2 away record in the top flight.

Aston Villa have now won 5 games in a row in all competitions since losing at Anfield and that has meant moving into solid positions both in the Premier League and Europa League standings. They were able to come from behind to beat Leeds United at Elland Road in the last away game played and that also snapped Aston Villa's run of consecutive defeats on their travels.

Ross Barkley is a doubt, but the Aston Villa squad looks pretty healthy moving into this busy schedule.

Head to Head

Aston Villa took four points from Brighton in the Premier League last season and the majority were earned in a 0-3 win at the Amex Stadium.

That means Aston Villa have won 3 of the last 4 away games played here with the exception being a Brighton win.

Prediction

This is a fascinating Premier League fixture between two of the current top five and two clubs who have big ambitions to fulfil over the coming months.

Brighton are set as favourites being the hosts, but Aston Villa have enjoyed playing at the Amex Stadium in recent years and this is a confident group travelling to the South Coast.

Fabian Hurzeler and Unai Emery will be very happy with the recent results, although it does feel like Brighton have been a little more convincing in the results being earned.

Take nothing away from Aston Villa who have found ways to win football matches, which ultimately matters more than anything else, but they were fortunate to win at Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United in recent weeks. They did not create a lot of quality chances in the home win over Wolves this past weekend, but Unai Emery makes Aston Villa tough to beat and that will be the case here.

On the other side, Brighton were very good in the win at the City Ground on Sunday and they have been scoring plenty of goals in home matches this season. They were pegged back by Tottenham Hotspur after leading 2-0, but Brighton have only been winning at home since that fixture in September and they have perhaps been able to fly under the radar in terms of how well they have been playing.

The head to head is a little worrying for Brighton, but they have looked solid in recent outings and home advantage may be the edge they need.

Last season they were beaten 0-3 by Aston Villa here, but two of the scorers were on loan with Unai Emery's team and will not be involved. Recent results have to have given Aston Villa a lot of confidence, but they have a big game coming up on Saturday against the Premier League leaders and that may see Emery make a few changes that ultimately gives Brighton the advantages to secure three points.

Backing the home team on the Asian Handicap will return half the stake in the event of a draw and respect for Aston Villa's ability to 'find a way' in recent weeks means that looks the best approach to take.
