Football: English Premier League
Saturday 6th December 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
Newcastle United
Eddie Howe had been hoping the win at Everton last Saturday was just going to be the spark his Newcastle United team needed to show consistency as they manage domestic and European commitments. They played well enough on Tuesday to secure another victory, but Newcastle United frustrated the home fans by conceding another injury time goal that saw them drop key points.
The 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur will feel like a bitter blow for Newcastle United as they try and climb back up the Premier League table, but there is little time to feel sorry for themselves during this festive period. The Magpies are back at St James' Park on Saturday where they now have a 4-1-2 record in the top flight.
Newcastle United might only have lost 1 of the last 4 games played in all competitions, but the draw with Tottenham Hotspur means the side have only won half of the last 6 fixtures that have been played. Adding to the disappointing of the draw with Spurs is the fact that Newcastle United's winning run at St James' Park was snapped at 6 games.
Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and William Osula are out. Emil Krafth and Sandro Tonali have to be considered doubts, while Yoane Wissa continues to work hard on his fitness so he can finally don the black and white stripes for the first time.
Burnley
It has been another difficult week for Burnley after seeing the likes of Nottingham Forest and Leeds United win Premier League games and the pressure is now beginning to mount on Scott Parker. There is going to be plenty of respect for Parker in the boardroom having guided Burnley into the Premier League, but they will not want the team to lose too much ground to those above them in the relegation battle and big decisions may be needed to be made.
For all the push and drive and perhaps even the misfortune, Burnley suffered another defeat on Wednesday night and that has left them in 19th place in the Premier League table. Now they have to make a difficult trip across the country with a 1-0-6 away record where Burnley have scored 10 goals, but conceded 21.
Burnley had won back to back Premier League games against Wolves and Leeds United, but they have now suffered 5 losses in a row. There has to be some concern about the lack of threat being posed going forward, while Burnley have lost consecutive away League games at West Ham United and Brentford in fixtures in which they have conceded three goals.
Axel Tuanzebe is a doubt for this game.
Head to Head
Two seasons ago, Newcastle United beat Burnley comfortably in both Premier League games played.
Newcastle United have won 6 Premier League games in a row against Burnley, while winning 4 of the last 5 when hosting this opponent at St James' Park.
Prediction
Eddie Howe will be hugely frustrated with the points dropped against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, but this feels like the perfect fixture for Newcastle United in their bid to get back to winning ways.
Not only have they dominated Burnley in recent meetings, but Newcastle United are hosting a team that have been conceding goals at an alarming rate on their travels.
The Magpies have also had twenty-four hours longer to prepare for the game and they are taking on a visiting team that have seen the losses pile up and the pressure build on manager Scott Parker.
Finding the right balance between attack and defence has been a real problem for Burnley, although they have been a bit more threatening away from home as they have exploited hosts on the counter attack. That may be the best avenue for success in this one, but it feels like a long shot and Newcastle United had been in very strong winning form at home before the injury time goal conceded to Spurs.
Goals have not been a problem for Eddie Howe's men and they have options coming off the bench to keep the attacking threat going for a full ninety minutes.
Winning football matches by two or more goals are never easy, but this looks a really good situation for Newcastle United to be able to do that this weekend.
