An encouraging sequence of results under new boss Tonda Eckert has given Southampton a new lease of life in the Championship as the south coast club now occupy a place in the top half of the second tier table in 10th place ahead of this upcoming Saturday lunchtime fixture against the league leaders, Coventry City.

Despite being handed recent losses by Millwall 3-2 and Norwich City 2-1, both of which were away from home, The Saints have also picked up six recent wins in the Championship since the departure of former coach Will Still, with four of these six wins being achieved on home soil at St Marys Stadium.

Important victories over Sheffield Wednesday 3-1, Leicester City 3-0, Birmingham City 3-1 and West Brom 3-2 not only suggest Southampton can give Coventry City a run for their money here, but also suggests plenty of goals in the process.

Coventry City hold a valuable five-point lead over 2nd placed Middlesbrough while the Sky Blues possess an even more important 12-point cushion above 3rd placed Preston NE heading into this weekend’s fixtures in the Championship.

It’s increasingly looking like automatic promotion is now Coventry City’s to lose but having picked up six wins within their last eight games in the second tier along with losing just once, the west midlands visitors will be tough to beat on the road this Saturday.

Only two of these recent six wins were recorded away from home though as Frank Lampard’s side collected valuable three-point hauls at Stoke City and Middlesbrough, while a heavy 3-0 loss on the road at Ipswich Town followed by a 1-1 draw at Preston NE suggest holding back on an away win here.
