Oxford United remain in the bottom three of the Championship table following a 1-0 defeat away from home at Charlton Athletic last weekend and Gary Rowett’s men are two points adrift of Portsmouth and safety ahead of this upcoming Boxing Day fixture against Southampton.

Oxford United have managed to capture just one win from their last 10 league matches which came in the shape of a rare but very welcome 2-1 home win against high-flying Ipswich Town, but The U’s have also slipped to five defeats within this period as well.

Defeats to Stoke City, West Brom, Swansea City, Preston NE and aforementioned Charlton suggest steering away from the straight win markets but goals look set to feature here as six out of Oxford United’s 10 home games have resulted in both teams scoring.

Southampton have climbed up into the top half of the Championship table despite a disastrous start to the season under former coach, Will Still, as new boss Tonda Eckert, has inspired the south coast club into 11th place in the Championship table.

Despite winning just twice in their last six matches in all competitions, The Saints have picked up league wins against the two west midlands clubs, Birmingham City and West Brom, in high-scoring 3-1 and 3-2 victories respectively.

Losses on the road though at Millwall 3-2 and Norwich City 3-2 still suggests an element of doubt over whether Southampton can grab all three points at the Kassam Stadium against an Oxford United side who are now fighting for their Championship lives.

Saints have also failed to keep a clean sheet in their 11 away games to date.
